I think Dr. Mario might be an older Mario. His Melee [SMASH] trophy mentioned a "lack of exercise" is to blame for his lower speed.

It does bring up the question of what Pit's alt would be since Dark Pit was the most obvious choice.
That could just be a reference to him not running around through the Mushroom Kingdom like the other two do.

@Otherarrow: Indeed he did. Of course, Mario Kart seems to ignore "same person being in a different slot" anyway, so I doubt he even cares at this point. I don't think it means anything for Smash, as the official reason Dr. Mario is playable is due to the fact he has different moves that aren't exactly the same properties as Mario's(just reskinned). Melee only.
Why he's like that in Smash 4 is not known just yet.
Shadow? Also, when Sakurai revealed Lucina, he also noted that she was going to be just an alt for Marth, but then he decided to change up her properties a bit, implying that the concept of "alternate character alts" is indeed a thing.
Personally, I'd think that Dark Pit would be a shoe in for that, especially since, if I recall, in canon his only difference from Pit is his edgy attitude. They are identical in terms of abilities. Having him have his own character slot with different properties and such seems kinda...well, it defeats the point I feel.
Dr. Mario I can see getting the Lucina treatment, since, yeah, he already had different properties in Melee anyway.
Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.We have customizeable movesets and alternate costumes. Tatsunoko Vs Capcom already showed you can easily integrate a couple of different voice lines with "Silver Lightan". It irks me that certain characters have been their own slot in the past and may be again.
And I shall should my chorus from the heavens: DARK SAMUS! RIDLEY! ISAAC! ISA & KACHI! MEWTWO! IMPA!
RAY! SCEPTILE! TAKAMARU!
Well, there's always Smash 5, assuming Nintendo ever gets there.
Well, no use speculating about whether or not it's a good idea he'll be in. We're basically discussing damage control.
You know, with around 50 characters it'll be very time consuming to complete Classic and All-Star Mode with all of them.
I can't wait!

Thank you for your kind words.
However, I must inform you that, as the entence underneath my box points out, my name is Psyco, not Psycho.
Psyco is a word in an alien language with a specific meaning, which I cannot share with you.
I am perfectly sane! Honestly!

Well, it's at least a very successful Cult Classic and a part of a lot of our childhoods.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerGame designers are free to recycle their stuff as much as they want to for their own projects, but a lot of people would argue that Smash Bros isn't Sakurai's series as such, but rather Nintendo's series that Sakurai just happens to be the lead designer of, and those people (including me) think he could do a better job at giving even-handed representation to the various aspects of Nintendo.
He could do a much worse job, of course, but that doesn't mean he's exempt from criticism.

I couldn't care less about favouritism. I just dislike the idea of a character that's really hard to visually distinguish from another character.
