I can explain this one; They couldn't get them ready for the 3DS release, but had enough time for the Wii U version.
They want those to be good and well made. Temporarily removing them to finish them properly is a very good strategy. Also, I doubt they're day 1 dlc outside of a specific version(so, 3DS ones only), where the Wii U ones would come later. I think they're very likely to available well after the Wii U version.
Of course, if the DLC is real, anyway.
Shadow?Who said they'd be day one?
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerThat's the main issue people have with DLC. It's always misconceptions that they're day one purchases that exist solely to drain the pockets of the suckers that are willing to buy the characters even if they aren't included in the base game. Which, to be fair, has been done before (Look at the way Blaz Blue handled a lot of its DLC characters for the third game). But it's not always done that way. I feel I should point to one of the mottos we have at TV Tropes to discuss this kind of point.
Nobody. Must've been an assumption.
But yeah, I highly doubt they are. Unless it's for both versions(so day 1 of Wii U version). It'd ruin the connectability idea Sakurai wants. Both having the same roster. I highly believe, due to this, any DLC characters will be available for both versions as is.
As for whether some might be free while others are not, no idea. I do agree it's likely one or the other period, but that also depends what Sakurai thinks. Likewise, I do think he'll opt for free as well. Not necessarily for other content, but for characters specifically.
Shadow? You see the funny thing is that consumers generally prefer the opposite trend—characters free, costumes and extras paid. Sakurai seems to be one of those developers that, while he loves mercilessly messing with them, will do stuff to appeal to consumers in the end rather than what the business end wants him to do. Not to say it won't happen, but that's just my feeling.
And dammit, I actually read an enlightening article once on why day-one-DLC is not as money-grubbing and terrible as consumers think it is, but I have no idea where it is and I completely forgot what it said.

For me, it has to do with a bunch of run-ins with some people who took that sentiment way too close to heart, to the point of lamenting how alone they were whenever someone argued against them. so now I sort of have an instinctive reaction to head it off.
And that's nowhere near the only issue I have with figurative language. Don't even get me started on "decimate".
you sure it wasn't an episode of Extra Credits? "Mass Effect 3 DLC", I think it was.

d.
I know Day One DLC isn't as money grubbing as consumers expect, but that's the problem—no matter what the reasons are behind it, it's not going to change the sentiments of the public: that day one DLC is a complete cash-in made by businessmen with dollar signs in their eyes trying to suck out every penny from their fans as they possibly can. It's just what happens.
My thoughts exactly. There's a stigma that Nintendo can't afford to have.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerI like to think of Smash DLC like this: Characters that were cut that were originally planned ought to be free, while if they make new characters as DLC, it shouldn't be Day 1. It should be released later on down the line, to create more longevity towards Smash 4.
As for the "leak", other than Dr. Mario, that seems like a good roster and the DLC sounds good (assuming it's real of course...).

Vote. .#Bayonetta 4 SmashThe thing is, I don't see coding, animating, voicing and balancing five characters as something that could be done in the time between when the base game is finished and when it hits the stores. So if they're adding five characters as day 1 dlc it means they must have been created earlier and then removed from the base game. Not saying that they will actually do that, though.

honestly, it's a choice between stigmas at this point. Do they want to be the company that will sell bits of a game at a premium, or the company that doesn't quite get how this "internet" thingamajig works?
or started, but not quite finished before certification time rolled around.

Well, while I could see it for some games, SSB is not one of them. Sakurai kind of has standards in that regard.
So I don't see Day 1 DLC happening at all. Maybe when the Wii U version releases. Why? 3DS ones weren't done in time, but they finished them during the Wii U development, so all of them become downloadable on both versions. This is actually a good way to do it.
Also, totally agreed that day 1 dlc paid for finished characters is lame. Anybody new, however, is not. Unfinished should either be free or much lower price, imo.

Shadow?I think SSB is going to have DLC, but Sakurai isn't going to be involved in it. He might just leave a section of Sora Ltd. to develop more characters, but Sakurai made it clear that when he's done with SSB, he wants to move on to something else until it's time for a new SSB.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.

Am I seriously the only person who wouldn't mind paying for extra characters in the coming years post-release? They do have to pay the voices/animators/licensing fees somehow.
...as long as you're not Bribing Your Way to Victory with it like Kat and Isaac in PSASBR. THAT I'd draw the line at.
