Did you miss the "might disappear if Customization is turned off" part of my message?
That's a very possible reason.
Anyway, I do consider Yoshi's position very odd(not so much the clones, but they are strange too). As pointed out a bit before, the poor quality of some characters' head shots is also suspicious. I'm believing this particular shot is fake. The actual roster might not be, though.
Shadow? It's not like Miis being unlockable would be utterly unheard of. See Mario Kart.
I would be okay...-ish with this being real. Mewtwo's absence is the only thing that bugs me.
Irene: No I saw that but I find it unlikely an entire character will be removed from the selection screen if that's done. At most they'll just be locked into their default moveset.
Fawful: What bugs me isn't Mewtwo's absence. It's Dr. Mario returning over him. Bullshit. If Sakurai does that I will be legit pissed off at him.

Well, I'd think given Dr Mario's positioning that (if this is real) he was a lat-second clone addition like Lucina (and like he was in Melee)
Meanwhile, it'd be hard for them to make Mewtwo a clone of anybody, really.
The thing that leaves me scratching my head is why they have 7 Mario characters, but only 5 Zelda and Pokemon. That just confuses me.
"And kung fu is a terrible way to run a company" - alliterator@Waffle A mix of longevity AND popularity. Mario has been around forever and has like a hundred games. Zelda and Pokemon may be popular, but Mario's got so many spinoff series too.

You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayI don't think you understand the Miis that well, then. They have no default moveset. That's why they're banned from With Anyone online. Palutena does, Miis are always "must customize" no matter what. Or at least from what Sakurai has seemed to inform us of.
I do think them disappearing and not being grayed out is odd, but it is not impossible. If you can't directly select them, why have them on the screen?
I can honestly say the only glaring holes are Yoshi's placement and the questionable quality of the overall images for each character. Who you like/dislike is not a problem and really doesn't stop Sakurai from adding them. He added Dr. Mario once, why wouldn't he add him again? Quick clone, no issues.
Also, to be fair, the Mario series lost a spot in Brawl, and Pokemon actually got 4 new ones(although only 4 direct slots). I don't think there's really a good way to view it. They only have 6 for Mario, with a quick clone that was last second. It's like they used the Mario count in Melee for Pokemon, and Brawl's Pokemon count for Mario. Odd switch.

As far as the game's concerned, all three of those had only four characters each.
I don't think a series is ALLOWED to have more reps than Mario. (Which, come to think of it, explains what possessed them to add Rosalina...)

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerWaffle is correct. Sakurai considers them all separate characters. Slots are different, and only exist either for having Transformation characters or to note when a character cannot be an Alt(like Dr. Mario and Lucina in Melee and 4).
He outright clarified that Brawl has 39 characters. There are officially 6 Pokemon and 4 Mario in Brawl, period. Slots don't matter in this case. However, it is possible that the actual slot count won't allow anyone to exceed the Mario series. It's a plausible theory due to Brawl's specific setup. Mario was tied twice with Pokemon(64 and Brawl) and once with Zelda(Brawl) in direct slot placement.

Dr. Mario was never tied with Mario in Smash(they were always separate). Dark Pit was. We know Mario's customizable moves. There are no Megavitamins. This pretty much makes him being an Alt impossible at this point. Dark Pit's only legitimate issue is the model problem, not moveset, as we already know he can have unique moves. Let's not forget Dark Pit is his own person in Uprising entirely. A literal clone, but still a different body and mind. Not even a transformation like Sheik is.

Shadow?@The Mage of Fire: That's actually a very good point. Thanks for bringing that up. That might kill that particular image. The Yoshi bit doesn't help, either.
Although I did look closer at that image. The hand does not actually go into Wario's square. It just matches the color. It's his shoulder. His hand is cut off, instead.

Shadow?

Now, that's a little unfair, given that G-Dubs was the same way in Brawl.
The New Age of Awesome is here! Not even the sky is the limit!
