@Gary:
Sheik's still relevant. Rundas and Gandrayda are not.
How do you explain Sheik still appearing in Brawl, when all she had was unused concept art for Twilight Princess?
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page. Thanks to everyone for answering my Sticker Star question. I didn't think it was that much of a change from the other games.
I suppose I'll just rent it from Game Fly or borrow it from my brothers (who both have said that it's alright) and see if it's good enough for me to buy...
...And I just now realized how many 3DS RPGs I don't own that I want to get, though Dream Team and Shin Megami Tensei IV are top priority right now.
Speaking of which, any chance of us getting anything SMT-related in 4? I mean, we have a Rayman trophy, so I feel like anything's possible.

Sheik got into Melee because she was relevant at the time. She was kept for Brawl because she was in Melee, not to mention being part of Zelda's moveset. Grandfather Clause and all. Now that she's been in two games she's pretty much an SSB staple even if she's not relevant in her home series.
Lucario is the same deal, it probably wouldn't be in SSB 4 if it hadn't been included in Brawl thanks to being relevant then (Granted, it's relevant to X and Y, but probably not enough to be included on that alone).
The problem with the hunters is that their best time to enter has passed. They didn't get in when they were relevant, and likely won't get in from here on out as a result.

They only spoke about it because I asked a question after seeing the stage and catching up on the thread at the time. Sorry for bringing it up again.
EDIT: I feel Sakurai chooses characters based on how fun they'd be, rather than their relevancy (not that that isn't a factor, or a small one to consider, but I don't think it's a huge one either. And I do suspect that the other people he works with may have differing opinions if that is his mind set and probably also affect how the roster is drawn up).

Super Paper Mario may be different, but it was still a good game. Great story, great characters, fun platforming, and inventive puzzles. Maybe it wasn't as good as TTYD, but that didn't make it bad.
Sheik was in Brawl because she was part of Zelda moveset, and she's in 4 because of Grandfather Clause. It's not complicated.
Lucario is in because it's one of the most deserving Pokemon to be in. It's probably the second or third most relevant Pokemon in the series, beaten only by Pikachu and maybe Charizard.
Of course, I'd say that at this point Lucario's relevancy is no longer an issue, like with Jigglypuff. Now that it's been in two SSB games it's basically set for life even if it falls into obscurity within its home franchise. Like Jigglypuff.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Even so, I think Lucario is set in stone for popularity. It helps that his movie was one of the more well-received ones.
And yeah, Sheik is still in because of Grandfather Clause, already having her own moveset prior to the form split (same with Zero Suit Samus, who'd likely never be her own character otherwise.) It helps her case that she's a popular character in her own home game, so...

This is actually my headcanon. Super Smash Bros. is its own promotion that sets up fights and the whole roster are its employees. Sakurai's the main boss obviously.

I always figured it was a tournament Master Hand cobbled together for craps and giggles. Some characters love fighting, and some others (Samus) really REALLY hate being yoinked out of their universes.
...now that I think about it, Master Hand is an intergalactic Shao Kahn. Huh.

Even the first Paper Mario's story was deeper than Sticker Star's. Sticker Star's story is about on par with the New Super Mario Bros. games' stories.
Bowser doesn't even speak. He's just a mute final boss.
Super Paper Mario doesn't get ragged on as much because, while it was a big gameplay departure, it still retained the same feel and charm as the first two in every other way at least. Sticker Star returned to the RPG gameplay style but also butchered everything else that made the series Paper Mario, AND butchered the RPG gameplay anyway.
