Hm...
Mega Man is heavily projectile-focused, and uses roughly the same move for three of his attacks, so he can run-and-gun.
Villager can store projectiles from enemies and items to fire off later, and has a three-part special move.
Wii Fit Trainer has a skill that is used for buffing damage of other moves
Rosalina is a Puppet Fighter, with a disjointed partner who mirrors her moves with variant moves of his own.
Little Mac's air game is horrid, and his ground game is horrifying. He also has a charge meter for one of his special moves that builds up as he fights.
Mii Fighters are three character types in one. They and Palutena are the only ones to have 16 possible moves, rather than four moves with three varitions.
Robin can swap out their currently-equipped weapons, which have limited uses and (maybe) can change the jab combo.
With the possible exceptions of Pac Man and Greninja, Sakurai really is going all-in with the "newcomers with unique mechanics" thing.
Fingers crossed for Isaac/Felix/Matthew, wielding the Djinn system, complete with variable Summon attacks.
I have a message from another time...Hoo boy. I'm sure some people are already using this to abandon all hope of a play experience more balanced than what came before. Personally, if I had to rate "uniqueness" or "fairness" above the other, I'd go with fairness.

Elbruno said above. He may have said that balance and fairness were afterthoughts, but that doesn't mean he never considers them.

Mike Z does it too but he compensates by always making the characters underpowered first. Then once the character gets close to completion he buffs them up for testing and sees where they need to be balanced. then they end up underpowered again Not sure if Sakurai does that.

... So guys.
This isn't an Arcfire tome. This is a Bolganone tome.
◊ Arcfire only has the cross, not the circle around it.
I didn't even know Bolganone GOT a separate tome graphic, btw.
Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.Bolganone wasn't a volcanic blast in Awakening. It, like many spells, got a super-simplified animation in Awakening. In Bolganone's case, a targeted explosion of fire.
I must say, it makes me miss the awesome-looking spell animations Radiant Dawn had.
Amusingly, Smash doesn't have the Awakening version of Arcfire's animation either. In Awakening, Arcfire is sort of like a flamethrower, spraying from the mage's hand.

I have a message from another time...He says "Arcfire" ("Gigafire" in the JPN trailer). And later in the trailer she says it again.
edit:
So, I noticed that Robin's currently-equippd tome seems to alter Robin's jab combo, if not other moves. Early in the trailer, Robin seems to do a jab combo while holding a fire book, and it's a sword swipe followed by an explosion. Later in the trailer, Robin does another jab combo, but this time with a wind book, which produces a swift flurry of wind blades. The common thread between them is that Robin starts the jab with a swor swipe.
So, that's a cool quirk of Robin's moveset.

I have a message from another time...So that's the Bad Future Lucina is trying to avert.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!A future where her father is everywhere and everything probably doesn't fit her criteria of "Bad Future."
What is a fandom? A miserable little pile of flame wars! 3DS FC: 0387-9377-7408 PSN ID: Raven King Sage

I'm pretty sure he didn't mean that he won't balance anything about the characters; just that he first focuses on coming up with an unique and fun mechanic for a character, and then focuses on balancing it. He won't ditch what could become something enjoyable and unique just because it looks unbalanced at first glance.

"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."
