Full Translation of that magazine that Sakurai was in talking about Robin and Lucina.
Poor Chrom man. One second everyone thinks he's an inevitability, the next second everyone pokes fun at the guy.
Now's it's Shulk Time!5 pages in 1 night... what did I miss?
Further confirmation that F-Zero and Fire Emblem go together.
Clearly they need a crossover.

Looking back, what did Chrom have going for him that makes him not being a playable character in SSB 4 surprising?
He's not the most important character in Awakening.

"After all, she has a close relationship with him in FE:A"
...why do people keep saying that??
they basically have no connection at all besides lucina using his name, a really deformed version of his blade, and being his decendant millenia down the line. thats not a close relationship and the only time they even meet is during the dlcs where at best, lucina will be cutting him down (although will still be in awe of meeting the hero king like pretty much everyone else)
Because it's easier to say that than to say everything you did.
Also, Tiki notes that, personality wise, they're very similar as well.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! The most important things regarding Robin and Lucina:
Robin:
His neutral special is thunder magic that grows stronger the larger you charge it. He uses fire magic for his side special, and wind magic for recovery as his up special. Although Robin doesn't use dark magic in FE:A, I decided to assign it as his down special. It isn't the first time I've given moves to a character that they don't use in their respective game in order to capture certain aspects of the original title.
I also implemented the system used in FE:A, in which tomes break after overuse. Likewise, I included a similar system for the Levin Sword, which breaks after a certain number of uses. However, both the tomes and the Levin Sword will quickly regenerate after a set period of time.
Lucina:
Initially, I had considered including Lucina as one of Marth's alternate costumes. After all, she has a close relationship with him in FE:A. In such cases, even if two characters' names and voices differ, as long as they function the same way, I assign them as alternate costumes. The Wii Fit Trainers, Villagers, and Robin are examples of this setup.
However, even though Lucina shares her physical stats and techniques with Marth, the characteristics of their attacks differ. When two such similar characters function in an even slightly different manner, I give them a separate spot on the roster since that will affect battle records and whatnot. In that sense, you could say she was very lucky to join the fray!
On why Chrom got the cut:
At the end of the day, Chrom would just end up being another plain-old sword-wielder like Marth and Ike. Compared with other characters, he lacks any unique characteristics.
Conversely, when the idea of including Robin came to mind, conceiving the character was so easy that I immediately saw how it would work. From standards to specials, grabs to throws, all aspects of his moveset just fell into place. Not only did he possess characteristics unlike other fighters, but he also captured the essence of the Fire Emblem series. It was perfect!
Summary:
- Robin was practically a shoe-in according to Sakurai's logic, because he was able to bring something unique to the roster (being a magic swordsman in contrast to the rest of them being pure swordsmen), and Sakurai could, and did, think up a suitable moveset for him.
- Lucina was originally supposed to be an alternate costume. Her separation from Marth naturally occurred when the damage from her sword was evened out to contrast to Marth's playstyle, as that made her different enough from Marth to warrant a separate slot in the roster.
- Chrom got the cut because Sakurai felt he couldn't differentiate him from the rest.
- Robin being able to use dark magic is the classic Sakurai handwave: A character representing their game gets something they couldn't use within the normal rules in order to show aspects of their games that would otherwise be left behind.
- Both the tomes and the Levin Sword will regenerate after a set period of time. This probably didn't surprise anyone.
Also, Lucina has taken the place of someone else, but that's because that particular someone was no longer viable to develop for some reason or other.
Pretty much. Also probably why Female Robin is included. (And pretty much everyone else with gender variations.)

Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!The most telling part is that, at the end of the day, the characters that Sakurai is willing to add in are those that bring something new to the table. Not particularly mind-blowing, and it has been rather apparent, but it's nice to hear. Even Lucina, clone that she is, has a role as a "novice Marth" according to Sakurai.
I'm definitely more receptive of Lucina being in as replacement for a character that unfortunately couldn't be worked in. Keeps the roster the same number without needing as much work, throws a bone for the fans, and is basically Sakurai trying to make up for what would otherwise be an empty spot. As a bonus, I think I can get by.

Meh, I do SSE on Extreme all the time. It isn't very... extreme.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
