I don't think it'll apply to the playable Pokémon again (for obvious reasons) but what if type advantages apply to the Pokémon that are enemies in Smash Run?
From SmashWiki it appears Chandelure can absorb any fire-based attacks via Flash Fire, which is what prompted me to ponder this. Also, uh... I'm sorry for anyone out there who's going to main Charizard, because of Chandelure in Smash Run.

Thing is, that kind of contributes to the problem with him.
"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyChrom's fine as a swordsman, but the issue is that, although their fighting styles are different, Smash has a lot of swordsmen. Holy swords, barbed swords, flaming swords, legendary swords, swords that are huge, swords that turn into bows, swords that only appear in taunts... our cup runneth over with swordsmen.
And Fire Emblem is not only about swordsmen. Swords are only one third of one third of the weapon types in that series, depending on the title.
I have a message from another time...However, the Lords, the main characters of the games, almost invariably use swords. Even the handful that don't, like Ephraim and Micaiah, are inevitably accompanied by one that does.
I honestly don't have that much of a problem with sword fighters in Smash- It's a celebration of video gaming in general and Nintendo in particular, and swords are easily the most common weapon type in video games.
I say we throw in a bunch of generic red-uniformed classes in Smash Run to get our weapon triangles in, with Chrom using the Falchion primarily but switching to a Silver Lance or something for his Up Smash and have him lob a Javelin or a Spear for a special.

I sure said that!Although I'd like Robin as much as the next guy, Chrom makes the most sense for both an Awakening rep and a Fire Emblem newcomer.
Ignoring the importance of Awakening in Fire Emblem history, Chrom is probably the most recognizable Lord after anyone who's appeared in Super Smash Bros.. Likely the first one where people in general wouldn't have to look up what game he was from, too.
The problem is... some of the people complaining, for the most part, don't care (and some hate how prolific swords are in gaming, making them hate the glut of sword users that Smash has in general). If Chrom shows up wielding a sword, all they'll see is "Fire Emblem Character + Sword = Another swordsman from a series where everyone is a swordsman, even the Assist Trophies". It doesn't help that the series has somewhat of a reputation for its clone characters due to Melee having a bunch of them, so most can't really fathom how Chrom would be all that different from Marth or Ike, especially since he's from the same series.note But I suppose that this is just a consequence of having a large fandom.
By the way, considering how often this discussion of Chrom has popped up, has there been any sort of hints or leaks that alludes to a third Fire Emblem character being in the fourth game? Or is it mostly just wishful thinking?

The "Gematsu Leak" has gotten all the newcomers so far except for Rosalina, and kind of Greninja.
Part 1: Animal Crossing Villager, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Little Mac, Miis, Pac-Man.
Part 2: Pokemon from X and Y, Palutena, Shulk, Chrom, Chorus Kids.
There's also how everyone assumes the most recent Lord will be in Smash Bros., a two-game tradition of Roy and Ike.

If that meant Robin and Tiki would appear, I suppose I wouldn't mind.
Final Smash is the Awakening, followed by some huge version of Aether.
That, or enormous attacks from everyone. Two Aethers, dragon fire, Ignis, etc.
Or maybe Robin uses Rally Spectrum on everyone, and they go to town, alongside Chrom?
I have a message from another time...
