There are plenty of Pokemon already, but Jigglypuff still adds plenty to the game, namely by having an awesome air game and the pinnacle of Difficult, but Awesome in her Down-B. Ness has always been weak, but that shouldn't matter much. He's an extremely unique character, though I don't know if Earthbound being on the Virtual Console could factor in.
Those two may not be nearly as memetic as the good Captain, but I think the game would really lose something by having them gone.
"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"Good. They might be tempted to reuse that Elemental Rock–Paper–Scissors bullshit from Brawl.
"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"You can also use {{curly braces}} [[Tropers/{{0dd1}} like so]].
EDIT: Why isn't that working? That should be working.

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Since there's no Pokemon Trainer, who's whole gimmick revolved around his three Pokemon, they have no reason to add the elemental power-play element back into the fourth game, especially if they add a Grass type in. All they'd be doing is repeating what was wrong with the mechanic in the first place.
What I'm saying is, I can't see the devs be "tempted" to reuse the mechanic again in the first place, even if they did re-implement the Pokemon Trainer. Mostly because Sakurai seems like he's aiming to fix (or avoid repeating) some of the issues people had with some of the elements he added in Brawl.

All 3 of Pokemon Trainer's mechanics were fairly annoying in general. Forced Switching(albeit, I personally liked this one, but I do see how it's an issue too, if you're trying to main one of them), Elemental Rock–Paper–Scissors(especially since Charizard had less weaknesses than the others. Most Water moves did little damage. That said, this can stay gone regardless), and Them Getting Worn Out(I forgot the name of it, but yeah. That was just ridiculous and made all of them alone not viable in any possible way, forcing a team, even if you'd prefer not to. At least with the first issue, you can be allowed to switch back during the Match as a special rule. It's silly, but it's doable).
Shadow?Pokemon stamina was perhaps the worst part about the PKMN Trainer. It pretty much forced the player to switch up between the Pokemon, regardless of if the player wanted to focus on one pokemon throughout the fight. The mechanic just didn't translate well in a Smash setting IMO.
Also, here's a codec of Zamus I just made.
- Palutena: Pit, what's up with your face? It's as red as a tomato.
- Pit: Uh, what are you talking about milady? My face isn't red. Never have been through out this fight...
- Palutena: Stop lying to the all seeing goddess Pit. Is it because you're fighting Samus in her Zero Suit? It's not okay to stare...
- Pit: Well, yeah I am fighting Zero Suit Samus, but I swear it's not the reason I'm like this! Honest!
- Palutena: Sure it isn't. Anyway, I'd stay clear of those kicks if I was you. She's seems to have armed herself with boots that are attached with rockets. She's also armed with that gun that paralyze if you... Pit are you listening to me?!
- Pit: Huh? Oh sure milady! Rocket boots and the Paralyzer. Gotta look out for that!
- Palutena: -sigh- Pit, I were you I'd keep those thoughts in check, especially around the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy!
- Pit: Sorry milady. Can't be helped huh? -nervous laughing-
Pit's sapient and is capable of making choices and giving consent. Also, some of the dialogue seems to suggest he's capable of a sex drive, so in his case he probably does have said equipment.
It saddens me to see perfectly innocent words associated only with a particularly poor user of them. What did those words do to you?

I have a message from another time...

Captain Falcon was available from the start in Melee, alongside Ness.
