Now that I think of it, I don't think I've ever really been disappointed by any character reveal in the series. The most negative reaction I've had was imagining how the fanbase would react to the Mii Fighters.
Of those, Rosalina, Mac, Mega, and Samus are my top picks.
This is what I think the final roster is going to be.

Is it just me, or were Mega Man, Palutena, and the Villager the only newcomers that were pretty much universally accepted? I mean, some people got really upset over the Trainer (at first, anyway).
Rosalina recieved some hate because they feel she's overexposed, because she's yet another Super Mario character, or because she's often sexualized by the fandom. Mac was seen as potentially boring due to his status as a boxer, like the Trainer, that changed upon seeing him in action (and Japan doesn't like Punch Out all that much, so his inclusion recieved some criticism there).
Greninja isn't Mewtwo, nuff said. A lot of folks were dreading the inclusion of Miis, and many (from what I see) still aren't impressed. And I've seen in this very thread how much people were against Pac-Man joining the fray, although it has lessened a bit since his announcement.
I'm not complaining or anything, I just think it's interesting how all but three of the newcomers have/had such disappointment and even rage directed toward them.

edit:
Lucina begins the main story by arriving in the present day and attempting to guide the party towards averting the catastrope.
Robin has a significant connection to the main enemy (enemies), and happens to be the one capable of defeating the fell dragon forever.
Chrom? Well, he's important in the Mad King part of the story.

I have a message from another time...![]()

Change that to Villager only and then it'll be accurate.
Chrom? What is that... Chrom? That's not even a word.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerHow about this. Lyn is probably the face of Blazing Sword, and she's by far the most wanted character from that game. Yet she's only the sixth most important person in that game, if even that. But if BS was going to get a character, she'd be chosen. Eliwood wouldn't, and Hector doesn't have the support base. Importance is secondary to being the face.
That being said, I also want Robin more. He's got more obvious potential for diversity.
I'm talking Fire Emblem as a franchise and the idea that they've got Marth and Ike and potentially a third character that is theorized to be a third character who happens to be yet another "guy with sword".
Roy doesn't have Grandfather Clause.
I'm actually fine with him as an actual character. I'm just happy that Ike didn't get replaced.
