Screw Pokémon X & Y, making my Greninja actually learn how to fight and adapt is the way to be a pokémon trainer.

They're more or less an extension of the AR cards that the 3DS uses.
The Smash figures allow you to essentially train and level up specific characters, IIRC.

figure fighters are characters that you can use to help you out in battle they can level up and will learn your opponents strategies over time.
You can't play as them but you can basically tag battle with them.
Sakurai says you don't need to even use the feature but if you want all the figures you can get them.
The Figure Players (FP) can reach a level of 50.
