Well, that's a bit different than what I was talking about (insulting people based purely on how they play the game, which I consider the main component of "Stop Having Fun" Guys) but... huh. Are they saying it'll be terrible specifically because of items, or because the players themselves won't be able to play with items?

"And kung fu is a terrible way to run a company" - alliteratorActually, the Boomerang was introduced way before even Super Mario 3D Land, but here there's just the item itself, not the costume that comes with it like in platformers, so I guess it's more reminiscent of Mario Kart 8.

I wanted to choose a quote, but there was so many I couldn't choose.Ah, right. Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3's e-Reader cards introduced the boomerang, right?
Although I think the item itself takes the form of the Boomerang Flower. I think we've seen it in one of those giant FaceBook picture dumps.
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaYeah. The Boomerang Flower in particular is a 3D World thing. The costume... Well, there's a reason they don't take the time to give everyone a boomerang outfit in MK 8, either.
I have a message from another time...There is no right way to play Smash.
It should always come back to this statement. It's like balancing a watermelon on top of a needle though. There's always going to be someone, "casual or competitive", who subtly insists that one play style is better, or has more grounding, or simply makes more sense because of the way the game is designed.
The use of "competitive" and "casual" bugs me. I'd never heard of them before until I started researching Smash Bros.
I can see the Smash characters distinguishing each other as "Veteran" and "Newcomer", having "For Glory" and "For Fun" type battles, in-universe. Terms like those attract, they're neutral, they're archaic and gladitator-y. I can't see them using "casual or competitive" as monikers, it doesn't fit their world. That, silly enough, breaks my immersion.
Hell, if they'd named "For Glory" and "For Fun" as "Competitive Play" and "Casual Play", I might have avoided the game entirely and just watched the Final Smash compilations on Youtube. The tournament/coliseum nature of Smash Bros' gameplay, in addition to the sparse number of characters from franchises I knew about, has always been a large part of its appeal for me, and that was back when I had friends to play with.

There definitely is this elitist subculture in competitive Smashers (it's the reason I left Smashboards all those years ago), which is a characteristic of most fighting games. Or competitive games in general, to be honest.
But like the Scrub subculture in casual play, it doesn't necessarily represent the body of competitive play as a whole. The internet is going to be filled with the loudest and, sadly enough, most obnoxious subsection of people out there.
It's an interesting point that many people with the smugger attitudes are those newest to it, and that it's a very "middle school" mentality in general. Reminds me of a few people I've met in a few tournaments I've been in.

You're always going to get the elitist mentality whenever there's any large group of people doing something competitively. Dumb, but unavoidable.

That's just fandom for ya. Fan Dumb is like a small number of elephants in a herd of zebras - they make the most noise and they're the hardest ones to miss.

What is a fandom? A miserable little pile of flame wars! 3DS FC: 0387-9377-7408 PSN ID: Raven King SageI remember being incredibly disappointed with how Project M either took out the fun stages or watered them down to the point that I wonder why I don't just set stage selection to "random". In fact, I think the mod's existence supports the belief that fans are incapable of handling any kind of change to their beloved series. And yet, it is still my favorite Smash Brothers game.
"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"^ That's another characteristic of long runners, especially fighting games. There are always going to be Street Fighter fans pissed about how the series has changed from Street Fighter III (or even II), always going to be Marvel Vs Capcom fans pissed about how the series has changed from Mv C 2, etc. Format changes and mechanics changes happen in long runners, but there are always fans who rail against them and prefer things to be exactly as they were.
As for mods, if I'm using one I prefer Balanced Brawl, though I'd rather play vanilla.

As has been stated, most of the "Stop Having Fun" Guys are kids who just discovered the competitive side and think it'll be "cool" to cop that sort of attitude.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!I'm competitive often, but I don't mind any ruleset. If I can't play well around stage hazards, that's a problem with me.
Super Smash Flash 2 has that option.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerThey should have made Battlefield variations instead of Final Destination variations, since at least Battlefield provides a way to balance out projectile users.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page. But Battle Field wasn't one of the MOST picked stages in Online matches...so how would the developers know?

Well, I've seen a lot of people (not on this forum, but elsewhere) complaining that the Smash Bros Invitational is going to be terrible, simply because the matches will be a free-for-all with items on.
