Even if a character has little to work with from their native series, look at characters like Sheik, Little Mac, Captain Falcon, and Samus (Melee moves, at least). Not to mention taking someone else's moves and appropriating them, like Zelda using Link's magic, or Ness and Lucas using offensive PSI like Paula and Kumatora instead of their usual defensive PSI.
Granted, the closer a moveset is to the source series the better, but one or two made-up special moves is always fine (Gotta love the Green Missile), as is simply extrapolating for melee attacks.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!I'm aware that Ike and Marth do nothing but sword swings. That actually makes Magnus's addition an even worse idea because you'd have to contrive the crap out of his playstyle for him to be unique or bring anything to the table after two other characters have worn the "sword-swings-only" shtick thin enough already. (And I feel the same about Chrom.) Considering that Magnus is a pathetically minor character in his one game, it's really not worth the effort.

What is a fandom? A miserable little pile of flame wars! 3DS FC: 0387-9377-7408 PSN ID: Raven King SageI may not want Ridley in, but he might be fun as a grappling fighter.
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerI don't really know why people want Magnus in at all. Right off the top of my head, Palutena and Medusa both deserve to be in the game far more than Magnus does, and even then he'd face competition with characters like Phosphora. He may be an Ensemble Dark Horse (I'm not sure whether he is or not honestly) but he really shouldn't be playable regardless. An Assist Trophy is the highest form of honor I'd see for him at this point.
"And kung fu is a terrible way to run a company" - alliteratorI agree with that point.
Now, while keeping that in mind, I'd just like to note that I don't find the "he'd be so hard to differentiate from Marth" argument right. He's definitely a different sort of swordsman, with a different fighting style, what with the weapon that makes Ike look restrained.
But yes, Medusa, or maybe Palutena, would be better by far.
I have a message from another time...Going back to the Legend of Zelda reps: the only character I could see being a rep is another Link, since the Links we have now represent the two of the three timelines (Adult (Toon Link) and Child (Link)), we would have to have a Link from either before the split or for the Dowfall timeline, but looking at the avalible Links, they are all just too similar.
We have the Skyward Sword's Link, who doesn't really have too much unique to make him different from the our current ones. He might be able to be much more of an actual fighter, instead of using items, but nothing much else, and the fact the Beetle, one of SS Link's unique items, is an item in game doesn't help him at all.
Minish Cap Link's has two unique abilities, one of which (the ability to become tiny) wouldn't seem useful at all, and the other, the ability to split into four different Links, might be best saved for a final smash. He also shares a similar art style to Toon Link which really doesn't help him. He also has the Mole Mitts to dig, and the Gust Jar, which sucks instead of blows, the Cane of Pacci, which could let him flip over things. He could also have Enzo help hin out in attacks.
The LttP/Oracle/LA Link really doesn't have much going for him either which hasn't already been done
The Link Between Worlds Link has a bit more going for him, including 4 different elemental rods...well...actually, that's about it. His unique ability to go into walls wouldn't really help much, since not all of the stages have walls.
Link Prime could utilize magic more than the others, since he wields magic in the adventure of Link, along side his swordplay.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."I honestly feel like Tingle is the best Zelda rep, given his prominence. Of course, he's like Mii, in that he deserves it, but not many want it. Ghirahim may have style, but he really has nothing over the likes of Zant or Yuga, so I don't see him happening unless he returns. Impa as noted is kind of redundant, but I doubt anyone would complain about her. Two Links is fine thank you very much. Masked Link had potential, but no transformations kills that idea.
I'm kind of partial to Ganon, just to have a second Triforce trinity. Really though, Zelda doesn't have an obvious newcomer unless you want to pull out more Toon characters.
As of Hyrule Warriors, the issue of Impa being redunant with Sheik no longer exists. But that runs headlong into a related issue; that it's as of Hyrule Warriors, and we don't know how much of that game was known by the time the character list would have been finalized for Smash.
Speaking of Masked Link, there is one other way he could potentially work, even without transformations in the traditional sense. What if he were to transform, briefly, to perform an attack, and then revert back to Link? Some of his moves would be what you'd recall from Young Link, but others woud entail momentary transformation. Like his Side smash could be a Goron punch. And his Up Be could be the Deku Flower. Etc.
The issue there is that such a mechanic might not play nicely with the hardware. You'd have to load the different models every time he used such an attack.

I have a message from another time...![]()
The thing about Tingle is Everyone who isn't Japanese hates the guy.
It kind of goes both ways. No one in Japan seemed really enthused about Little Mac, if I remember correctly.

And they assumed the same thing was going on with Greninja. Sweet fuck that was hilarious.
Of course, the differemce between American Tingle and Japanese Little Mac is Japan is mainly apathetic about Punch-Out!! while the USA actively despises Tingle.

Then wouldn't he be perfect for Smash Bros since you could use Training Mode for exactly that purpose?
Tingle would be a hilarious addition if only because of how people would react.
What is a fandom? A miserable little pile of flame wars! 3DS FC: 0387-9377-7408 PSN ID: Raven King SageWe've got yet another Mushroom Kingdom.
Kamek does appear on this stage(so possibly disconfirming him apparently?) to cast a spell to outright change its shape. So it's kind of similar to Pokemon Stadium.
This week's having a nice start. The stage looks interesting, and I like the little detail of having Mega Man and Sonic in there. Wonder how many variations will it have.
Unrelated: The final battle of Smash Invitational is gonna have some kind of reveal involved, like a trailer after the victory or a Giant Space Flea from Nowhere kind of thing.

An important lesson to be re-learned...
NEVER bring up the Move-set potential argument for ANY character, you will almost ALWAYS be wrong for doing so. Ending up being assaulted with numerous examples of why you are wrong.
