[up][up]Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Like, you could keep information for a character on their figurine, such as your nickname, customized moveset, favorite color palette, maybe stuff like total KO's you've done with them or whatever. And then you'd be able to go play Smash Bros. at your friend's house with all your character settings already done for you.

[up]That is what I was thinking.

I think that they are going to use the NFC for 3DS and Wii U communications. The leak didn't mention the 3DS version but when Nintendo started with the NFP they brought up that they are creating a portal for the 3DS.

Okay, here's an idea.

Custom movesets.

The custom movesets can't be used during anonymous online play anyway, and I doubt custom moves are allowed during tournaments, so basically custom movesets would just be For Fun. So, why not have fun with it, add special NFP movesets, may it just be alternate colors of fireballs or other projectiles, or other cosmetic changes. Heck, they could store something like animations that normally don't get used by characters, so that you can apply them on the custom moves.

Heck, if that's a bit too much, you could just link them to custom moveset presets, movesets that more reflect their canonical appearances.

Why wouldn't they be allowed in tourneys?

Because people wouldn't have set strategies to combat them. Haha...well, unless they took the time to learn EVERY POSSIBLE MOVESET SETABLE.

Which would actually be a lot less random than just items.

In fact custom movesets should totally be allowed. It'd require people to be more adaptable to other people's styles.

Other than very specific ones being banned if they show to be overpowered somehow, there's no real reason to. Well, some tourney owners will ban 'em anyway. But I doubt all will.

NFC is most likely for custom fighter moveset saving. Pokemon Rumble U does that with its NFC figures. So it doesn't make the game feel lacking if you don't have them, they'd just be a bonus.

[up][up]It'll probably be banned from the general ruleset at the very least. Part of what makes the competitive community in fighting games thrive is everything you can do with a finite roster and amount of matchups. Introduce too many variables and it becomes too much of a hassle.

But that's where the fun is!

Also the personalization. The kinds of moves a person sets shows others how they fight.

Strong slow attacks or small quick attacks...whether they put more stock in power or in speed...things like that.

I mean there's no denying there's a certain appeal to it. It's just not the same as the general appeal of fighting games.

I could definitely see seperate tourneys being held for custom movesets, but not for regular tournaments.

Nah. I doubt the variable stuff will make it banworthy at all. It still depends if the moves are worth banning on their own. And if the Iceballs from Mario is the worst we can get, it's kind of doubtful. Randomness alone doesn't matter, it still requires the thing to be too strong. Also, the thing about items is that capsules alone can explode in your face, even with weaker items on. That's one of the main reasons we can't just throw them on without worries. Sure, there's few items that are fine(Beam Sword, for instance), but it'd require a lot of testing, and to make sure "explode in your face" isn't even possible.

Really? I've seen fighting games with such variables included. Character assists come to mind, especially when the game allows you to choose which move the assist character will use, or select assist characters who aren't otherwise playable.

Heck, the Dissidia games have the entire moveset cusotmizable.

[up] Mario hasn't any ice-balls. We've sen giant-but-slow fireballs, and quick-but-short ones. Kirby has ice breath, though.

I'm pretty sure it's fairly well-documented exactly which items can explode in your face. I'm not sure why it would involve a lot of testing to make sure that's not possible.

[up][up] Missaw it then. Ice Breath, then. Point overall stands, though.

[up] And testing every item, not just the explosion bits. Again, still takes time.

I think Smash is a different beast simply because there are so many ways to play. In games like Marvel, the assist thing is integrated into the general gameplay and is fixed. With Smash, you can change things like items, match types, etc. and they could all be separate games. This will probably gonna be the same case.

If you want to use custom movesets, don't go to tournaments. Seems pretty simple, as I doubt they're common enough to invade our regular play sessions. Chances are we'll have to get our hands on the game to determine if the changes are truly radical enough to be worth banning. The pros will decide that when the time comes.

Also, items can be REALLY random. Sometimes picking up the Timers slow down you instead of everybody else. And throwing Team Healers at the other team can either damage them or heal them.

And Smart Bombs will either explode on contact or go right through people and explode later.

I find the items and the randomness to be part of the fun. Sorry if I'm a "filthy casual", but playing without items on final destination-like stages just seems boring to me. Heck, I'll often choose the random character and stage option as well.

Also, congrats on getting the 44444th post, Keybreak grin

Personally, I just don't see custom moves as a factor that should be dropped. It's not a random element, and there should be few enough of them that figuring out your foe's set is just another part of the mindgames that go on (kind of, but not exactly, like predicting movesets and items in Pokemon).

I figure the custom moves will do little more than add a bunch of extra slots to the character tiers.

Unless it's like a slider thing instead of a slot thing.

Like you increase the size or direction of the attack and not just choose between "Standard", "Large Fireball", "Small Fire Shot"-like buttons.
