I'm not saying Nintendo couldn't win. I'm saying Sony's interest would drive up the price.

I have nothing particularly meaningful to add to the current conversation, but concerning Pac-Man... well, the important thing is that it was confirmed that a third-party character inclusion has to be a special case. Pac-Man would certainly fit this due to how historically important and legendary the character is to video gaming culture regardless of the lack of modern relevancy.

I would be very amused if Bandai Namco included a character from a more recent and very popular series. They're the publisher, so maybe?

Though how would they implement the An Adventurer Is You, Hello, [Insert Name Here], ageless, faceless, non-specfic gendered, can-be-anything-by-endgame-in-terms-of-abilities-and-playstyle kind of character?

[up] You mean the one that isn't on Nintendo platforms at all? No way Sakurai would let them.

I was mostly joking with that. But it would be very amusing.

BTW, what the hell is up with all the Goku and Shrek demands for Smash? Goku I sort of get, maybe, but Shrek is just pure what.

Shrek is mostly just joking. He's been gathering a cult-like worship lately.

Shrek is actually halfway reasonable(since he isn't from a Manga/Anime first). Goku isn't(outside of the version from Journey to the West).

Some are still thinking Sakurai said they had to originate from a video game. God Never Said That. He outright said "No Manga/Anime characters." Being from a video game first is not official criteria as of Brawl. However, this might not apply to 4 and it could've been changed. He never said they had to be "special" in his Brawl criteria.

I doubt anyone not originating from a video game for 3rd parties will get in, of course. But those doing the research at least are making legitimate requests(unlikely instead of impossible). Goku(DBZ) has a 0% chance of getting in. Shrek has a very low chance of getting, probably less than 1%. And this is being realistic here. Again, unless Sakurai changed the 3rd party criteria to "must've originated in a video game" during 4's development, well... doesn't matter if they request non-Manga/Anime guys. I say just ignore it, move on, report those who flame others about it, etc. Act decent and all.

[up]Shrek is halfway reasonable but Goku isn't? What? Shrek isn't a video game character and it's clear that that's a requirement.

[down]I'm pretty sure it's just a joke.

How is manga/anime somehow less reasonable than movie?

Does it matter, Bad Wolf? He didn't say it. I don't question why, I just accept the facts and move on. Everybody needs to stop spreading false information when people make requests. There is nothing unreasonable as long as it is allowed by his criteria.

Asking for a character from a Manga/Anime(something he said will not happen) is not reasonable. Asking for a character from a different media is completely reasonable, as it's theoretically possible(just highly unlikely).

[up][up][up] How is it "clear"? He didn't say it, did he? That's just people putting words in Sakurai's mouth. He didn't say any of that and people need to stop saying he did.

[up][up] I don't know. Just some weird meme. Would've been funnier during Brawl's development since at least we know he had a ghost of a chance since he fit the criteria.(Nintendo appearance, unique, not being from a Manga/Anime game, someone people would want to play as).

Really, considering they're both animated media, at least Goku can say he's had far more games on Nintendo consoles than Shrek. They're both never happening in a kajillion years though.

They are both equally dumb choices. Why are we talking about this rubbish that is "Shrek for Smash" and "Goku for Smash"? Neither of these characters deserve to be in Smash at all. A made-up alt version of the Ice Climbers should be considered before we get the likes of these two.

They are both equally irrelevant to video gaming and Nintendo history due to the nature of these two characters.

I find it more likely that Sakurai will reverse his position on Anime/Manga and include Goku (DB) than include Shrek. Neither have a chance in hell anyway.

And now I shall announce my support for Sailor Moon.

Irene are you honestly saying that you think Goku is completely off the table but Shrek has a slim chance at getting in?

On another note how many non-video game characters are in Smash or have ever been considered for Smash?

I might as well point out that unless you heard him say that today, it's not a "fact" that manga/anime characters are not allowed, because Sakurai could have changed his mind at any point.

Actually, you know what? I'd rather talk about Fire Emblem than this current topic.

So how about the idea of Chrom? Assuming he is in what's more likely-him being a starter character or unlockable?

[up][up]R.O.B. Also Mr. Game and Watch. neither originated from a video game.

Number of games don't matter anyway. It's having one on a Nintendo platform period he cares about according to the real criteria.

Yeah, I don't believe either would ever get in, but only one could legitimately have anywhere near a chance between the two, and it ain't the Manga/Anime guy factually speaking. I would like if he gave us the latest 3rd Party criteria, but other than "being special", we don't know jack about it. It's still obvious they need a Nintendo appearance(as evidenced by the current 3rd party selection), but besides that, we know nothing about 4's specific criteria.

Damn straight, Kostya. I will go with his actual words over some dumb idea that his words should be ignored for some popular character. I go with his facts.

@Beorc: I highly doubt that he'll ever change his mind on it. There's no reason to anyway. There's tons of interesting characters outside of Manga/Anime. The only thing I can see likely is he'll change it, at best, to "originate in a video game", but as of now, "No Manga/Anime characters" was still an official criteria overall. At least for Brawl, as I noted before.

I am almost 100% certain being a video game character (with a game on a Nintendo console) is a must. Especially since Anime/Manga are catch-all terms in Japan - if it's animated, be it from the US or Japan, it's referred to as Anime.

K Sonik: Game and Watch was a video game. ROB I'll give you but he's a borderline case. He has appeared in a video game and he has a strong connection to Nintendo's history. Shrek and Goku would be third party and they lack any strong connection to Nintendo' history.

BadWolf21 Since: May, 2010

Mr. Game & Watch is a representation of the generic person in most Game & Watch games. He's close enough. (And if you really want to get technical, he did debut in a game: Melee :P).

ROB was a video game peripheral. Peripherals have been items before, so being a playable character is not unreasonable. Also, again, if you want to get super technical, he was in Mario Kart DS.
