I thought Blaziken was the most popular of the Gen 3 Pokemon. Or is that someone else?

Also, I'm not really sure that Sakurai would care all that much about Grass starters at this point. Then again, at this point, another newcomer Pokemon character wouldn't suprise me at all. We've always had at least 2 Pokemons added to the playable roster guaranteed at this point.

Blaziken is the most popular of the Gen III starters, no question, but again, Sakurai seems to be keen on the Grass-Fire-Water trio.

I sure said that!

While that's a valid point, I think the real reason against the inclusion of Blaziken as a playable fighter is that I'm gonna burn down their goddamn HQ if that happens.

You know, just saying.

Personally, if you want my personal opinion, I'm not really all that interested in another Pokemon Newcomer. Heck, I wasn't even that interested in a Pokemon Newcomer to begin with.

Ups the chances of Bayo herself, if only so slightly.

I do note he said "Wonderful 100"...

Only hope is Kamiya mentioning he wanted to do a Wonder Blue spin off game briefly a few months back. It's not much but it's worth noting.

Also I don't think we're getting any of the Hoenn starters, remakes be damned. If we get a Hoenn rep, I'm putting my money on Gardevoir since she got a Mega the first time around and is the gen 6 champs signature Mon.

Even with Gen III remakes, I don't think Sceptile has a chance of being playable. Just because we have starters of two types doesn't mean we're getting all three. Pokemon already has four characters, and they haven't shown Jigglypuff (one of the original 12) or Mewtwo (a fan-favourite (in its own franchise, at least) who missed out on Brawl) yet. I'm not firmly convinced that they're going to be in for sure, but I think they have a heck of a lot better chance than Sceptile.

I'm not ruling anything out about another Pokemon newcomer character.

Let's say we get Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, and Sceptile.

That's only one more than Pokemon had in Brawl, workload-necessary-to-add-to-the-game-wise.

I wonder what Squirtle's and Ivysaur's fate will end up as.

Honestly while I'm disappointed none of the Wonderful Ones will be in Smash, I can't say I'm too surprised that they were deconfirmed. The only kind of unique moveset I could think for them would probably be way too technically demanding, and the alternative would've likely been boring.

Yes, but because they're not sharing spots anymore, it's seven slots, and we've already been warned that the growth of roster will be smaller than previous games. We don't need that many Pokemon eating up space in the character roster.

I doubt Squirtle's back as playable. Ivysaur is fully up in the air, though. No replacement as of this time. As for Squirtle, I hope he's in a Pokeball or a Stage Hazard. I wouldn't mind seeing Saffron City come back too. Possibly throw both in there~

Honestly, 7 slots sounds fine to me. Pokemon is certainly big enough for it. Mewtwo is just as easily DLC or a good 6th character. I'd rather keep the other Gens widely repped(with playables) while keeping the fun Starter trio in the game. Jigglypuff and Sceptile are my picks easily for the 5th and 6th character. Mewtwo is last place. With Hoenn remakes confirmed, Sceptile's likeliness went up pretty highly anyway.

The only thing the Pokemon would be taking up considerably more of is more spaces on the character select screen. In terms of how many characters the game can hold, and how many distinct move sets are in the game? One more than Brawl.

Do you consider Metroid and Zelda as having an extra person each in the roster, now that the transformations have been split up?

I can't see PKMN getting more character slots than Mario. Being the mascot franchise, it's Mario that has to get the most characters, and PKMN at most can only match Mario.

Slots don't matter. Characters do. And Pokemon had two more characters in Brawl than Mario. Them getting more again is not hard to believe whatsoever. 6 is already highly likely at this point regardless. And we don't know if Mario will get another newcomer either.

[nja]Didn't pokemon already get more character "slots" than Mario?

Because people keep forgetting that Sakurai counts each transform character separately tongue And so should everyone else if you ask me <_<

Ivysaur I can do without, and Greninja is more than a fair enough trade for squirts.

Jiggs I won't even miss at this point. But she's a fairy now, so she still might be in.

Is Ness or Lucas confirmed yet? Lucas was my main in brawl.

Kind of already did that in Brawl, with Mario at 4 and Pokemon at 6.

Unless you count Wario and Yoshi, which ties them. And Mario did get Rosalina this time.

Waxing: Disagree with that, simply because Pokemon has way more options. If they've got one more than Mario, whatever.

But it's important to remember that Pokemon already has a way of including deserving characters without making them playable. There's an item that literally just summons Pokemon to the stage.

But all of this is besides the point. Here's why I don't think Sceptile should be included. The reasons people want it only come down to "It's Grass-type, and it's not from Gen III". That's the most compelling argument for including it. If Charizard and Greninja weren't already in, no one would be clamouring for Sceptile.

I've wanted Sceptile or Grovyle in for a while.

People like Hoenn and the 3rd Gen too. Some of us also want to see more than the 1st Gen overrepped as playable. If people want it, so be it. It doesn't matter why. They like it, and that's good enough. I just hope Sakurai puts Sceptile in, regardless of Mewtwo being there too. I'd rather have 7 slots regardless.

And we have Assist Trophies and Items for other characters anyway. Everybody has the same issues thanks to Smash Run showing off Weak Enemies as well. Even Pokemon are thrown in there. Pokemon is hardly special in that regard.

Regardless, I'm just happy we have something interesting to talk about. No matter what happens, it's worth speculating and imagining any hypothetical Gen 3 Pokemon newcomer.

Well, there is also the fact that Ash had a Sceptile in the anime? Or was it just a Grovyle? I don't know, one of those things. And yes, I know, the anime doesn't mean anything for Smash directly, but it still raises the status of Sceptile as an entity within the franchise as a whole.

@paperbritt: While a playable Gardevoir would be wonderful and make all my suffering up to this point entirely worth it, you can already see it among the Ball-Mons in the Greninja Trailer. Alas.
