I'm pretty sure Pokémon Speak is actually older than Pokemon, really. I think long ago, animals were named after the sounds they make (which can still be observed in Chinese), and this trope works on the same principle.

Fair enough.

^Not really since a lot of pokemon names are two different words mashed together meaning that they apparently have vocal cords capable of making human words :P Names like "cuckoo" are onomapoteia(sp?) instead.

Pikachu did speak in the Pokémon Speak in Pokémon Yellow which did come out before the first Smash Bros.

Misty was also dressed in her Anime outfit in Pokémon Yellow.

Pokemon Yellow also had Jessie and James tongue It doesn't really count.

Also, X and Y also have Pikachu have pokemon speech unfortunately. Which sucks. And is kinda weird since pichu and raichu lack it.

Don't make me take out the angry avatar again.tongue

Obviously most Pokemon names don't make sense as onomatopoeia, but that doesn't stop the principle "animals are named after the sound they make, ergo animals make sounds like what they're named" from being the idea behind Pokémon Speak.

It makes a lot more sense when you're Japanese and your mother tongue has a whole portion of its vocabulary consist of onomatopoeia for things that make no sound in any sense of the word, all while consisting of an extremely limited set of syllables that are wholly unsuited for actually approximating animal sounds.

It actually kinda makes sense for Pikachu, who seems to have been the one who popularized Pokémon Speak, because its name apparently consists of two Japanese onomatopoeias. It makes less sense when they start applying it to most other Pokemon.

^^Yes, but pika is onomopotowhatever for eletric sound type of stuff :P So technically it should be what in game cry sounds like: Electric noise plus mouse noises.

And Fawriel... I don't dislike Pokémon Speak because "its unrealistic", I dislike it because its ****ing annoying trope tongue

I wasn't even paying attention to who likes what or whatnot. I was just responding to the sentiment that Pokemon actually invented the trope (... though now I can't find the post where I think someone said or implied that), and then you were like "not really".

I'm not trying to make you like the trope. Because it is pretty annoying. tongue

Why are we even discussing about it?

But on things what are related to Pokémon, what would Spewpa (one of Poké Ball summons) would even do? Only thing I can think of is carrying its Hidden Ability Friend Guard.

I don't think anyone actually claimed it was made by pokemon <_< I just said that I really hate the trope and am sad that its part of series on wider scale now.

I rewatched the Direct, and noticed a couple of minor things at the slideshow at the very end. Namely, Donkey Kong's and Link's dash attacks appear to of changed to (respectively) the roll and the jump attack.

That was probably in response to me, who said the Anime brought in Pokemon speak. And I have heard before that it did make more sense in Japanese.

As an English speaker, my guess was that Pikachu was an archaic way of saying "rodent" since Pika and chu(mouse) are two different types of rodents or that Pikachu was a pun on Peek-out-at-you, since that is what a mouse does when it hides in your home.

So who is up for some online Brawling? I'll be Pikachu!

By the way, I figured out why that is.

Gamespy is shutting their servers down. A lot of companies are migrating their games over to other servers, but Nintendo's online experience was never particularly great to begin with, so they're just moving on.
