Metroid needs a new rep, Ridley is Samus's archenemy and most reoccurring antagonist, and he's a purple flying space pirate dragon. He's got plenty going for him, and he's arguably the last Nintendo All Star that has yet to be playable. K. Rool and Dixie are the only other possibilities for non-playable All Stars.
Edit: And Toad, but we already know he's not playable.

Ridley is one of Nintendo's most recognizable characters and is the main villain of one of their more popular franchises in Metroid. His style of fighting would be one unseen of any other Smash character (as in 100% brutal) as well as add more villain rep in the overall game.

Vote. .#Bayonetta 4 SmashI don't think Metroid is nearly as popular or recognizable as its fans think it is. Maybe back when the SNES was huge, but now?
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Extended maintenance is coming up on the 31st. It's the end of the fiscal year for Japan. Unless Monday shocks us, we're not likely to get a character in March. A Direct early April feels likely. And now villains taking over. I'm wondering if we're about to get a mass reveal of villains? Ganondorf, Wario, and a possible Ridley reveal. Probably not, but it's fun to speculate.
[[quoteblock]I don't think Metroid is nearly as popular or recognizable as its fans think it is. Maybe back when the SNES was huge, but now? [[/quoteblock]] You got it wrong, Metroid was a cult classic at best during the Nes through Super Nintendo eras. Even in the Americas, which were the target audience it was largely eclipsed by contemporaries such as Donkey Kong Country. It was more notable for codifying a style of platforming and its female protagonist that being a runaway hit.
It was the Game Cube and Wii games, up until Other M that genuinely made Metroid a franchise in its own right and a possible third rung under Pokemon and Mario (or maybe fourth below Zelda but Wind Waker was not the hit Nintendo had hoped it to be) however we all know how that ended up, with Metroid Other M having to be severely slashed in price to sell units after the comical backlash it produced. But yeah, anyway, the success of Super Smash Bros and Metroid Prime is what got a lot of people to go back and play Super.
Not that I particularly want Ridley or anything. I've been campaigning (on TV Tropes only) for a playable Metroid Prime. However, if Charizard does not return bring on the Ridley I guess.
Buldogue's lawyerI support Rids because he's awesome, Metroid needs a second rep (Which he's the best fit for), and because he'd also bring a pretty unique playstyle I imagine. He's big, but he's thin and light compared to Bowser. He's agile and can fly, and his attacks are often brutal.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!I'm trying to think of an appearance where Ridley was not blowing fire or some blazing I can't believe its not fire and settled solely on one of his two Brawl Boss battles.
I also don't see balance allowing Ridley greater agility seeing how he's larger than Charizard, even if you just take his scale in relation to Samus and Charizard's to the trainer into account. I think the only substantial difference between them is Ridley have a longer reach with his A moves and no tagging mechanic, less you are using Meta/Omega/Ice Ridley.
Buldogue's lawyerI could go with Omega Ridley though, if only because it is probably his most powerful form. (Unfortunately for him, Samus was more powerful than usual too thanks to hyper mode)
His Meta form in the Prime games was breathing plasma (fire is one of the most common places plasma is found anyway). All the rest were blowing fire(again, little difference beyond hot orange stuff)

Precisely what I thought.
Also, I always thought Ridley was breathing plasma. Must be my imagination.

🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse Alberia^^^ Actually, that itself is a problem. Being larger, no matter how fast he is, would probably make Ridley unbalanced in the opposite direction - especially if he's aerial based (since in the air you can only attack in one direction but are vulnerable from all four), unless they gave him crazy good priority on most of his attacks (or super armor on the same) which would, again, run the risk of making him too powerful again.
A lot of the things that would make him powerful, big and fast as a playable character are probably better directed towards making him powerful, big and fast as a boss.

Spyro? He should be in Playstation All Stars before Smash Bros!
Cortex should take a 12-step plan off a 10-step pier
