I know that, but he edit-corrected those arrows. Ninjas and such.

🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaNintendo is still doing well for several reasons, but one franchise in particular guarantees their safety. It's not Smash Bros., Mario, or Zelda. It's Pokemon. As long as they have Pokemon, Nintendo's handhelds are near guaranteed to succeed, as nothing else can match its popularity. The Wii U will probably get a bump when MK 8 and Smash come out, but Nintendo is probably just waiting out its lifespan by now.
Yoshi will probably be revealed soon. Out of all the unrevealed veterans, he's the least likely to get cut, and he's got several games coming up.

Aaaand as far as fighting Ryan goes, the first fight is a counters-only fight, and the rematch has him doing blatantly illegal stuff.
...heck, apparently he's the page image for Trying To Catch Me Fighting Dirty. Didn't know that.
Games, TCG, the rest of the merchandise... yeah, Pokémon is pretty much a gigantic cash cow.

🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaTo be fair, they had no idea Pokemon would ever get that popular.
I'm still kind of baffled by the popularity of it when you look at how absurdly broken the first games were. Maybe the Anime? Or the kid-friendliness of a game which, otherwise, would probably be one of the most hardcore and violent yet made.
Personally I could'nt stand watching half an episode, but I guess you're right, it do seems popular enough...
I think the concept itself sound like a kid's dream come true, I mean I don't know a single person who didn't enjoy imaginating creatures of all shapes. In fact, something I'm definitely not proud of, but I tried to grow out of it and even told myself the games were actually boring. I had to come back because I was so tempted to make another new team out of sheer fun.

RBGY were one of those instances where everybody knows about the game's bugs, but they'd have to go virtually out of their way to actually trigger them. Heck, Missing No, one of the most infamous among them, was apparently only discovered and acknowledged a handful of years after their initial release.
There's also that. The whole concept of the series was pretty potent in general.

"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyn Japan, Pokemon's big draw was the socialization and competitiveness of it. The monsters were also genuinely novel and there was a lot of team building potential (in theory, in practice psychic was all you needed. Normal and maybe ice types if you fought someone who knew what they were doing and was not using Mewtwo). Beyond concept and gameplay they also tapped into a childlike desire to have cool pets. You can also blame the virtual pet craze around the same time, or the furby craze, or the beanie babies. The surprising thing is not Pokemon's success as much as its continued success compared with the fading of similar contemporary fads.
The games were poorly coded and had even less wealth of competitive balance but you could say the same about Street Fighter II. In fact, a lot of that generated more buzz. "I caught a Pokemon at level 170! Look under this truck by the SS Anne to find Mew!" That stuff just applies to Japan by the way. The rest of the world was hit on three fronts, with the cartoon cashing in on the Japanese animation fad the likes of Dragon Ball and Gundam Wing were pushing and the card game...that one is still beyond me to be honest but it obviously helped overall in establishing brand presence.
Buldogue's lawyerPokemon Trading Card Game The Video Game was probably my favorite Gameboy game back in the day. I stopped played Red/Blue after a while (before kinda getting back into the series with Fire Red and totally getting back into it with HG), but I kept playing TCG off and on pretty much until the cartridge stopped working.
I discovered it on my own when I was a kid. :T Never heard about it before because I didn't have internet back then. It's pretty easy to encounter without knowing about it beforehand.

Aran Ryan for Assist Trophy.
