For all we know they are an Assist rather than a Hazard.
The source of the fire in this picture
has been unknown for a while, and as such I think the best guess is that Koume is the source of fire- as a stage hazard? I'd say it's likely.
At the very least Sakurai's been consistent with new Assist Trophies. There's also how we haven't seen any 3DS assists yet and the comment says they appear in Gerudo Valley.
From all this combined, I'm going to infer they're a stage hazard until something proves otherwise. Occam's Razor and all that.

🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaThe fact he outright said Waluigi's a returning Assist Trophy while not specifying Starfy's role is a problem in itself. Being new or not is just a nitpick. He's only confirmed some Assist Trophys on appearance.
Also, he did not say(even in his Japanese Miiverse post
, and while the Google Translate isn't the greatest...) they "only" appeared on this stage. It's only best given as "they can appear on here" with those words and not overreading the implications. "One piece today. The valley of Gerd, Tsuinroba that Kotake and ocular Appears! Absolutely, I'm going to the evil?" Same thing here with the meh translation. Also, the fact it comes up with a question mark is a problem. How do we know they do anything evil in here? He makes it actually sound like they might have caused it. Likewise, due to the lack of only, while they could've caused the fire on that stage(which an Assist Trophy could do as well), they could do that on other stages.
I can't even see any real legitimate implication that they're specific to the stage or even the cause of the fire. Just that we know they can appear on it and nothing more. Taking an extremely vague statement and putting in extra words is ridiculous.

Shadow?
Yup! Kotake is ice, Koume is fire, and if I know the difference between the two I really need a job.
That's another interesting point; Why wouldn't she do something? Why only one?
I severely question the whole point of why he made it vague other than the idea he doesn't want us to know the exact details justtttt yet.
An interesting thing is that Koume is actually quite similar to the Mago in Zelda II. Maybe it's a reference to that and why only she could attack? Since there was no Ice Mage in Zelda II... or anything till after OOT. But this is purely a stretch, of course. Won't lie about that.

Shadow?
He actually did, just it was in the comments rather in the post itself.
But yeah, that seems like a pretty good basis to go by.

🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaJust don't assume it's confirmed, which is the message being sent here. Assume it has a good chance of being the case, which is fine.
The thing is, confirmed stuff goes on the trope pages. Speculated stuff goes nowhere but Wild Mass Guessing. If you're assuming it's the case, it's WMG. You can't assume it's confirmed, because confirmations are facts, not opinions.
Shadow?OBJECTION!
I don't see anything to suggest that only one of them is involved. The angle on the picture with the fire is quite constrained. You can only see Link and a few feet of the stage. There could be ice off screen. Koume and Kotake could attack in sequence, rather than simultaneously. Link could be in a section of the stage that gets burned, while another side of the stage is where ice happens. Using that image to say that only one of them will attack is unsustainable.

I have a message from another time...Read the paragraph after that, Enlong. I made it very clear he's not telling us everything just yet.
Not that he was telling us much in the first place beyond "They can appear on the Gerudo Valley stage and they might be evil(due to the Japanese Miiverse post questioning their alignment instead of the badly translated English version. The question mark is there before the translation, already proving it was questioning it)." But we'll find out what he actually meant later on(by a far better worded Miiverse post, or when the game comes out).
Thankfully I'm looking at the Japanese posts to get better details on it, and in this case, more properly written. The fact that both versions don't match up puts a huge damper on them even being a hazard to anyone as is.
That said, after reading that, I actually am no longer leaning towards them being any kind of hazard(Trophy or Stage) now. Just that "we don't know jackshit beyond them being able to simply appear on that stage in some way". It would be cool to see Kotake firing ice, though, agreed.
Shadow?Pretty damn sure they're evil unless you're using the Majora's Mask versions.
Who don't use the fiery/icy versions of the brooms anyway.
Also... he specified the Gerudo Valley stage as being the stage where they can appear, huh?
Anything else I can say on this will be redundant, so believe what you want. I certainly can't stop you.

I have a message from another time...Eh, I read it all with the translation. The first part matches up; They can appear on the stage, and he noted that it's called Gerudo Valley. Don't get me wrong, them being a Stage Hazard is completely possible and I'm not saying it's not. I'm just unsure that's what he meant due to being vague about it.
The second half does not. He doesn't actually, when translated, say; "They're definitely evil." What he's more properly saying is; "They're definitely evil, right?" which is his usual way of speaking, trying to throw people off the trail.
That said, yeah, they're evil in OOT and it's an OOT stage. My main thought is that he might just being saying "Well, yeah, they're evil. We're using that version of them." Unfortunately, he doesn't give a good indication they caused any harm to the stage in any way. I doubt he meant that after looking at the Japanese post, too. "They might just be evil" is the best way to look at it, which, as noted, doesn't indicate they've done any harm whatsoever to anything.
Moving on, The Old Grannies is apparently a German translation of their name, so it was just a fun shout out at best? Which makes sense, then. Albeit, that was from Miiverse pointing it out, so I can't say for sure. The explanation of "grannies" being a joke is quite possible too.

Shadow?I think we're just overanalyzing. It was all a ruse anyways, they're actually playable
So, does this mean Smash Bros. will have a Grandmapocalypse?
If the Great Fox comes back, I want it to be Sector Z size again. The sizes in Melee and especially Brawl were too small.
