Ridley's Wings are only that tiny in the 2D sidescrollers and even then only in his boss sprites. The developers were too scared of his wings causing collision damage.
In 3D games (Prime, Prime 3), games with less collision damage (Brawl) or instances outside of gameplay (Official art, Zero Mission cutscenes) they tend to be larger.
But honestly I don't get the huge demand for Ridley (Though Dedede beat him out in Brawl votes I doubt Nintendo's made enough to fill in that gap for 4, which is not taking them anyway). I could see some appeal in a largish somewhat bipedal dragon flying with a stinger tail and fire breath if Charizard was not already on the roster. Charizard functionally has everything Ridley would potentially bring, unless you want Meta/Omega/Ice Ridley or Iron Ted.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackI feel like every Smash thread is just a cycle of Ridley being too big, Fire Emblem reps, and Little Mac, and roster cuts in between character confirmations. And now that Little Mac has been confirmed we don't even talk about that much.
It's mostly because he is the second most prominent character in the Metroid franchise and people think one rep is too little. Personally I'd like Rundas to make it in. I liked him.

nyo ho hoHe'll obscure everything on screen and his hitbox and reach will be absurdly large. Take this picture and imagine something three times Bowser's size standing next to Mario.
◊ Even hunched over his head would probably scrape the top platform. Now keep in mind that there can be four on screen at once. That doesn't seem ridiculous to you?

So, so far the one series who people debate about representation the most, and has the most commonly discussed possible reps, is Metroid.
Huh.
Let's see, a list of representatives from the series that have been discussed: Ridley, Dark Samus, Sylux, Rundas, Ghor, and basically every other character ever to appear in a metroid game.
I am in favor of Ridley and Dark Samus, mostly. Preferably Prime 3 Dark Samus, where she was FAR more dangerous, as opposed to Prime 2 where she just sort of killed a bunch of space pirates then got shot a lot.

Which is why Ridley is going to have to be scaled down. Not all the way though, just to about the height shown in his Melee cameo (maybe a bit taller).

pearlina brainrot affects millions of people worldwide. if you or a loved one are suffering from pearlina brainrot, call 1-800-GAY-NERDSThis is probably the best height he could have.
◊ Slightly taller than Bowser and two heads taller than Samus. It makes him look big and imposing compared to everyone else while not being so large he takes up too much room or can hit them from halfway across the stage.

So he's giant, powerful, and can hit people halfway across the stage. It just sounds far too broken and impractical when there are supposed to be four characters, stage hazards, and items all over the place. How would he even fit in smaller areas without his head clipping through walls or something?

That's because if he was too big it might throw off the balance of the game. Having Ridley be huge works when he's just a boss character but if you're controlling him and fighting in confined spaces against other much smaller characters his size throws off the entire balance of the game. Either he'd hit way too hard and be nigh impossible to KO due to his size or he's far too weak and/or light.

"Short" is a little strong. Nearly all the human reps are taller than him, save Mac and the Mario bros, but the majority of the cast is shorter than him.
More importantly, Bowser is compact. He's got girth but it's all pulled in so he doesn't take as much space. Ridley is far more lanky so he would naturally take a bit more liberties to work.

nyo ho hoYou have to remember, Bowser, Peach, and the Mario Bros are all very powerful in-universe. They're one of the few chosen Star Kids who have extraordinary powers.
The same is true of most of Smash's characters.
But Villager had no powers in his games.

I'm not sure Yoshis Island DS was canon.
Alternatively, I'm not sure Mario RPG was canon.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.

All joking aside Ridley really is pretty damn big.
A Smash version of Ridley would have to be scaled down quite a ways and nerfed a fair bit from his Metroid version

Oh really when?
