Did not say he would be overpowered, I asked why the suggestion that he would be was taken so badly. I don't recall Pikachu, Fox or Meta Knight making the previous three Smash Bros unplayable just because people found a lot of success with them in tournament play.
But no, Tekken Tag 2 is still the Mishima game (except Jinpachi, ironically). Tekken Five's multiplayer was slightly more balanced than its single player in that while Heihachi could do 66% damage with a tree jab combo and Jinpachi was playable in Dark Ressurection they could not produce guaranteed wins. Personally I think Soul Calibur II was there last good as you can hope for balanced multiplayer, back in 2001 and that's only if you ignore the console characters.
Opinion could change, I've heard Bob snapped Tekken 6 in two but don't have firsthand experience (6 was when I lost interest in Tekken, Tag 2 was mainly for Unknown). Similarly I haven't played whatever the last Soul Calibur was (I think it had Kratos in it) but Tekken Tag and Namco's general track record have not convinced me.
Buldogue's lawyerLet's just say there's a reason Meta Knight is the page image for Tier Induced Scrappy.
And for that matter, bring up that the trope exists at all.
My personal opinion is that the developers should strive to obtain the best balance that they can. Since it's a game with a variety, perfect balance is an impossibility, but not trying just makes people think They Just Didn't Care, and rarely do games with such a lack of work end up being good.
(That said, I don't mind overpowered characters if they're fun to watch. It's one of the reasons Marvel 2 and Melee still have scenes after who-knows-how-long.)
I personally think Mac's poor air game will be the death of him, more than his OHKO. Smash is a platformer just as much as it is a fighter. You need to be able to move and attack well in the air to get to platforms and dodge obstacles, and even at the competitive level you still need to be able to recover. If Mac's air play is anything like it's shown in the trailer, then he's fucked whenever he's not on the ground.
@Watchtower: It's true that most high-tier characters have great air games. But this is not necessarily the end for Mac! We already got the Ice Climbers: 8/26 in Melee and 2/38 in Brawl. Their air game is awful, yet they're brutal on the ground. There is still hope.
Poor recovery, but excellent air game, due to his high jumps, good air speed, and devastating air combos.

Oh not that I think it's a bad thing. I like the idea of a boxer punching-out angels, goddesses, and giant gorillas. I'm just anticipating going onto the Smash Wiki and seeing him put in Metaknight's spot on the tier list, and with that, he's going to be shunned from tournaments unless he's nerfed in some way, or until someone comes up with an advanced technique to counter him, or the next iteration of Project M comes out.
It's been stated that his aerial attacks are pathetic, and his recovery seems to be a one-directional Shoryuken. That said, one of the popular, trademark stages is a flat one, where one can probably stay on the ground and rough people up from there. It's an understandable trade-off. But time will tell if that's going to make up the difference.

The fairy from Zelda comes in as an item
, and possibly might be a remake of the first game's Heart Container.
I'm kinda let down it isn't Wind Waker's
bottled fairy; but it's still cool. I wonder if you have to smash the bottle open...
EDIT: Oh, anyone else notice the3D World joke in today's pic?

Tekken 4 and Soulcalibur II are both more than 10 years old, and "balance" refers to competitive balance, not singleplayer.
This is the team that made Tekken Tag Tournament 2, which I believe is generally held to be supremely balanced, no?
