This was pretty much my thoughts as an eight year old, minus the profanity.

Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite....How did you find out what the characters you never saw before were from? Read the trophies??? :V I did collect them all, but I never paid much attention to the text. So I only learned about them all after looking at wikis when Smash 4 was announced.
...Even though I've played Smash for years, since the first game came out. >_<

When I got the first Smash Bros., I knew the Mario Bros., Yoshi, Kirby, Link, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and Jigglypuff, and that was it. 8 out of 12 isn't too bad, all things considered.
pearlina brainrot affects millions of people worldwide. if you or a loved one are suffering from pearlina brainrot, call 1-800-GAY-NERDS
Those were pretty much all the characters I knew at the time.
I believe the pet-peeve is in reference to me? Anyway, I have been a video game nerd since I first got a game boy, so I knew the four Mario characters, both Pokemon, Kirby, Fox and Link. I did not know Ness, but friends who quickly told me all about how "awesome" Earthbound was (the mother base can be pretty...loquacious. Only one guy knew Captain Falcon. I should have known Samus but had almost completely forgotten Metroid, as I had only watched other people play it. My mom apparently knew Samus but was taken back by the fact she was a woman.
Buldogue's lawyerWhen I read the Melee trophies, I misread one and thought that Paula taught Ness how to have psychic powers. This does not occur in the game. Not sure how I came to that conclusion, reading the trophy description today.
"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"The only characters I didn't know when the series first came out was Ness, Captain, and Samus.
I had played the SNES F-Zero game, but never made the connection because I sucked horribly at it (and probably still would), and never really played it that much.
Addenum: BUT, the series did get me into the Metroid series and playing Prime and Fusion.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Filler update.
We already know Little Mac sucks in the air, but is awesome on the ground. Well, according to the Trailer, anyway.
When SSB came out, I knew Mario, Luigi, DK, Yoshi, Samus, Kirby, Pikachu, and Jigglypuff, and was only vaguely familiar with Link. I did not know Ness, Cap, or Fox.
When Melee came out, I did not know Sheik, Young Link, Ganondorf, Ice Climbers, Falco, Marth, or Roy. I knew everyone else, albeit only vague knowledge of who Zelda was ("She's the Peach to Link's Mario, right?").
During the leadup to Brawl the only revealed characters I didn't know were Lucas, Ike, and Snake, but by the time the actual game came out I had researched and familiarized myself with them.
So far I am familiar with all 5 revealed newcomers for this game, though I've never actually played Wii Fit and was only barely aware of its "trainer".

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!I think that first classic commercial is what sold me on the idea of Smash Brothers in the first place and when I knew I wanted to give the game a try.
And then I didn't actually get to do so until later when Melee came out. At which point my suspicions about how fun the game must be were proven correct.

I admit to being largely unfamiliar with the Captain and Ness when I got the first Smash.
As for Metroid, I used to watch my brother play Super back in the day. My first official foray into the series was with Fusion and Prime.
