Did anyone here play both the old and new Kid Icarus games? I never did, but my assumption was that the new ones are Kid Icarus In Name Only, taking cues from The Legend Of Zelda, Sin And Punishment and Metroid Prime Hunters (games I've never played more than a level of), much to its own benefit.
Is the gameplay a logical extension of the original? What of the story?
Am I just making shit up?

Never played the original, but I know enough about it to say that it and Uprising are completely different animals. While Uprising makes constant references and Continuity Nod type things to it (even outright using screenshots from it in some parts), the story is more or less ignored outside of its basic plot (Medusa is evil, Pit needs to save Palutena and can't fly, just try to make it past stage one you bitch). To be frank, though, there isn't much to the original's story outside of what you can infer from the manual or its multiple endings. The gameplay of the original is a more or less straightforward platformer built on the Metroid engine, whereas Uprising is more like a mix of Star Fox and a Beat 'em Up.

Insert witty 'n clever quip here. And here I thought this was the picture that confirmed Zelda as a summoner character. Damn you games that I haven't played yet!
Also, am I missing something here or does that Organization XIII-ass robed figure look nothing like that staff, or like any staff whatsoever?

"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."...
...OH! Now I see it! Freaking perspective tricks.
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."Except the Codec and Star Fox chatter were specific to stages and characters.
Snake's Codec doesn't work outside of his own stage. The Star Fox characters messages need their own stages as well.
If Viridi has messages, it'd probably only affect the Kid Icarus Character(s) and only if they're on that particular stage. If it follows how the rest worked, anyway.
I don't see how it would replace anything.
Shadow?Ha, Sakurai's just skirting the possibility of playable Palutena. Of course he would.
He was never shown.
There were hints in the Pyrosphere stage that he could possibly be a stage hazard, though.
Also, there's more than one Ridley, so that wouldn't matter. There's three Links in the 3DS version, two which are toon-based Links, soooo... one of them could still be playable. Meta or regular.
To be honest, I don't have high hopes for Ridley, but he's still a viable choice for playable.
Shadow? If you have Miiverse, check here.
Good luck, but I don't remember it.
But as I said, even if one of him appears, he could still be playable.(or even a separate boss/assist trophy)
Shadow?

That is indeed one weird-ass staff.

She looks a lot more... demonic in that screenshot than she does here.
