Well I must admit I really enjoyed crushing slapping Marx Soul with the hammer. Super Star Ultra has proven to be worthy purchase in my book, still, I cannot help but feel it would have been better if Masahiro Sakurai had done it. He probably could have fixed added a few missing touches to the original Super Star and maybe done some more...original additions.

Granted, I get that he does not make Kirby games anymore because of sequelitis and Hal's meddling during Air Ride and I know his last remake, Nightmare In Dreamland, was not his best work but looking at the subspace emissary I think it is pretty obvious this guy has a lot of untapped ideas bouncing around his skull.

First change would be more variance in enemies and bosses for Milky Way Wishes, where you go to these alien planets and encounter... the same enemies and bosses you have been fighting on Popstar. Secondly, the final four are Dedede copying Meta Knight, Meta Knight Up To Eleven, Wham Bam Rock but shinier and Marx copying Drawcia. As last night's discussion was on how the subspace bosses are wrongly considered to be riffs on Super Star bosses it is funny how when given the superior technology of the DS to improve on Super Star Ultra kept the reused elements and added a bunch of riffs.

Still an excellent game, because Super Star was already to begin with, but I felt it could have been better.

@Red M: Yes, all Project M requires is an SD Card with no more than 2 GB of space. It doesn't affect the actual game disc or data at all.

That is fine, I am not even saying it is a bad game (because again, Kirby's Adventure was good to start with) but there was very little motivation to get it if you already had Kirby's Adventure (and you probably did not when it was remade). Overall the changed aesthetics were not as appealing, the over all difficulty felt reduced, the best part of the butter building was gone and quick draw was cut for a watered down Samurai Kirby. There were some new enemies though (something Super Star Ultra could have used) and Meta Knightmare was certainly better than Adventure's extra mode. But it overall was not as satisfying as the original Adventure to me. (Oh, and there is a tiny little change in the plot that I am embarrassed I even noticed, given what it is. If he had merely kept the rotating tower and quick draw I probably would have overlooked everything else and skipped over ''Adventure's virtual console release)

I still have faith in Masahiro Sakurai as a developer, even after Super Princess Peach(those mechanics have potential for a great game, what was needed were better levels, more difficulty and a less offensive/creepy plot). I thought I would not like Brawl, taking away speed usually does not endear me, but it added enough to keep me satisfied. I found the level design in Subspace to be much better than Super Princess Peach, the enemies and hazards to worthwhile too. I was skeptical about Snake being in it but he was integrated perfectly. I love most of the new stages, such as Wario Ware, how Olimar resembles his own game so well, I don't like Zero suit Samus but I do think the Zero Laser is an cool concept (the armor looses a piece of itself to magnify Samus's beam and draws in everything around it, I even think there is some potential in the "Zero Suit" Idea, just not with Samus). It was refreshing to see Ivysaur, Meta Knight, Pit, R.O.B. and the final smashes. To be able to walk and shoot with items now, to not fall through water like air...

Based on Sakurai's work I think he could have made a better Super Star remake, even though his last Kirby remake was lacking in things I would have liked to see. It wasn't really to tear down Nightmare In Dreamland as to express I want to see what new content this guy can come up with. I have heard good things about Kid Icarus Uprising, most negatives amount to "It's not a platformer" so that might just be it but if it is not I think it will be from something he starts from the ground up or his next step in Kirby.

Hal has done some innovative things (Kirby 64, Canvas Curse, Mass Attack, Amazing Mirror&Epic Yarn were other companies but lets count those too) but they have not advanced the game play past Super Star. They may get there eventually (The Super Star Remake, Return To Dreamland and the upcoming Triple Deluxe may be starting them on the path there) but as of now the series feels a little self cannibalizing at times, more so than Super Smash Bros, which is about taking other people's ideas by definition.

@IAT: Fair enough, and yeah, I never actually owned Kirby's Adventure. (We do have an NES in my house, but I couldn't tell you what games we had for it beyond a couple Mario games and Duck Hunt, since all my sister and I ever played as far as I remember was Sonic 2 on her Genesis and some McDonald's game that I don't think was Mc Kids.) I did later download it on the Virtual Console, but, to be honest, and maybe this is "first played wins" in my mind, but I preferred the GBA version. Granted, I do usually tend to be biased toward portable releases, since, well, I've always been more of a portable gamer than a console gamer, but aside from the portability and the obvious graphical differences, I didn't really notice much of a difference between the two games.

And Sakurai headed Super Princess Peach? While I admit, that game does have its very obvious problems, like how it puts feminism back like 20 or so years, I did enjoy that game a lot when I played it, and it certainly was great to play a platformer with Peach as the protagonist for once, even if her powers were...questionable. note

Personally, as far as my stance on the Kirby games, I think they're pretty good as far as mechanics go. Maybe the series may have stagnated into formula a bit, but I'd say if you have a winning formula that works well and people like it, you don't really need to change it up too much if you don't want to. Especially since Kirby is supposed to be an entry-level series for beginner gamers—complicate it too much and it's alienating to the series' core audience. Of course, stagnate it too much and you lose the other part of the audience, but I think each game mixes it up enough generally to at least have some degree of challenge. (Well, except Squeak Squad, that game was ridiculously easy even by Kirby standards. Besides, when it's mixed up a bit too much, you get things like Canvas Curse and Mass Attack, and while I can't judge Mass Attack, having not played it yet (though some things about it are a bit off-putting to me), I feel like Canvas Curse was a bit of a weird experiment. I had fun with the game, but I wouldn't really want to play another Kirby game like that (though I probably would anyway if one came out).

[up][up][up][up] Nope, all you need to do is delete all the stages you have in the stage builder, then open the stage builder up. The SD Card takes advantage of a glitch and then Project M starts.

[up]The Wii has the weirdest glitches. I'm serious, a big part of the console's software exploits became possible because, in Layman's terms, a bit that was supposed to be a 1 was instead a 0. The bug's even called "Trucha", Chilean slang for shodilly made.

That kind of reminds me of the Twilight Princess exploit that would allow you to give Epona a thirty- or forty-character name, which could be exploited further to crash the system to console...

Something similar can be done with Brawl and, oddly enough, Lego Indiana Jones; although nowadays you don't need any of those games in order to do the things hackers did using those glitches.

Re: Super Princess Peach..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't it have Peach as the only character who had control of her emotions? Isn't that, like, the exact opposite of the stereotype?

It was a perhaps well-meaning game that fell into Unfortunate Implications.

Moving along, considering some of the favorites to be fighters are ending up assist trophies, I suspect Bowser Jr. will probably be one of those.

The enemies, most of which are at least implicitly male, were also subject to the crazy mood shifts, though.

I'm not sure there really was any message to it beyond wanting to incorporate a unique mechanic into the game and it accidentally being something that could be viewed as sexist.

[up]I dunno. Jr.'s only gotten more and more important to the series as time has gone on.

I doubt Sakurai would add another Mario fighter, because the whole dang place would be up in flames and arguments.

A Bowser Jr. Assist Trophy seems pretty nifty, too. I'm also thinking Dixie and/or Cranky will get Assist Trophy treatment, along with Ghirahim.

...I would love it if Cranky did Resetti's shtik. "So, you can make Mario and Sonic fight. I could too. Y'see, back in my day we had IMAGINATION, unlike you spoiled little brats. We didn't have everything given to us!"

When the only game in the series that stars a female is based around emotions, that's pretty bad.

With a male antagonist who's subject to violent swings in emotion, and a female protagonist who's in control of them. It's been a while since I played it, but I think that was the setup?

I get that basing it on emotions is perhaps not the best idea, however it's set up, but it runs directly counter to the stereotype. Not touching on the subject may perhaps be better, but it could be a lot worse.

I didn't see it as a woman and her emotions. I saw it as Peach and her emotions, because she's a very emotive kind of princess.

Nintendo's done other games about women not all about their emotions obviously. Like Metroid. And Donkey King Country 3.

If we were just talking about the Mario series directly, well I suppose it's questionable. But Peach has always been the girly damsel in distress type.

Except when she's her own hero. [lol]
