Cress was the first, and on the Super Famicom, and has the biggest moveset to draw on.
Lloyd popularized the series in the west, and has a lot of Cress's moves.
Emil has a somewhat different fighting style, including some more smash-y moves and buffs
Luke got his game re-made on the 3DS, and stands out from Cress by being more of a Zelos-type swordsman]]
Asbel is a very different sort of swordsman than Cress, and was originally on the Wii.
