Here's something that been on my mind for a long while... why are a lot (not all mind you) of fans of Smash have so much vitriol towards other games in the brawler genre. It's a great game, but it's not the first (The Outfoxies and Kunio-Kun: Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu came before it) and it most certainly won't be the last.
What's wrong with others in the genre?
The only other Smash-type game I've played is Playstation All-Stars, and I found it a decently fun game. I've barely heard of other games like them, let alone play one.
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."Another good series in the genre is the Jump Super Stars line, though you have to find a translation for that one.

,
To be honest, I have never heard of those.
Personally, I don't care much about the All Stars game, never been a fan of Play Station exclusives.

Me neither; I barely knew who 3/4 of the roster were, but the unusual supers-for-points fighting mechanic really grew on me. Plus it is the closest thing I'll ever get to Nathan Drake in Smash.
Funnily enough, Snake did appear in a brawler before he came to Smash. Then again, Dream Mix TV World Fighters is a really odd crossover with Konami, Hudson and JP Hasbro characters.

I think it's mostly because while Smash is certainly not the first of its kind, it is the one that more or less perfected what the genre can be capable of. Adding in instantly recognizable characters in such a unique fashion also helps out in Smash's case. While the Jump games and PS All Stars are fun in their own right, they still do come across as Follow the Leader-ish, that tries to nail down what made Smash popular to begin with.
Vote. .#Bayonetta 4 SmashNo, it is not because he clawed people instead of punching them, thought that helps. It is because the hit box on his dash attack is different, his standard attack is a three strike instead of a multiple hit, his up smash hits twice and takes more time to recover from, he has a delayed downward spike instead of a quick multi hit drill, oh and he moves much slower. Wolf is hardly clone like.
Even his B moves, his gun has a bayonet on it, his side dash is an anti air which gains vertical ground on recovery and his up recovery comes out quicker and relies on hitting a "sweet spot". The only that has no real significant difference in game play from Fox's is reflector. Now, it would be nice is Wolf's final smash was different too (I, personally, like the idea of a demon launcher) but his moveset other wise is not cloned. Not only are the animations different, but so are the effects and the utility. There are much different than Melee Falcon and Ganondorf and even further from Mario and Dr. Mario.
Incidentally, after Zero Suit Samus, Ganondorf's moveset would probably be my next target. You know, if I was a programmer/director on the project. At the very least I would change the Warlock Punch, Dark Dive and Wizard Kick into something like 'Warlock Volley', Dark Phantoms and Wizard Cadaver.
Everybody's Fire Emblem list seems to overlook the villains. Medeus I assume would just bring the Ridley debate back but Fomortiis, Riev the Blood Beryl, Nergal, Naesala (okay, not really a villain), Ashera, nothing on them? I personally dislike Awakening (based only on its art style and being a Fire Emblem game that is not Radiant Dawn) but Gangrel, Walhart, Cervantes and Grima seem easy enough to integrate.
Buldogue's lawyerEven if All-Stars seems like (or is) Sony following the leader, they went out of their way to make their own distinct and unique brawler, which I'm very enthusiastic about.
It's certainly more that can be said for more obvious knockoffs.
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse Alberia@Odd: What I mean is the people who are like "Dark Samus would just be a clone of Samus. I mean, look at its name, it MUST be, right? I'm not even gonna bother researching Dark Samus to confirm this, and will be adamant in my position even after people tell me otherwise". I've seen it occasionally, though not here as far as I know.
And yes Dark Samus is technically a "clone" in the sense that it has Samus's DNA, but I mean a moveset clone.
Obviously there's nothing wrong with not knowing on its own. It's the ones who then use their lack of knowledge as ammunition in an argument.

A major problem with the FE villains is that they are often only relevant for about half of the game(s, in rare cases) they appear in, and usually don't get anything more than a passing mention after they're defeated. They're easily among the last places Sakurai would look for when deciding on "notable" characters to include.

"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyBut Sakurai used Power Hungry Fool! Oliver's theme music! Oliver would be an interesting villain to put in a crossover too.
Buldogue's lawyerMy ideal FE 4-man team would be Marth, Ephraim, Ike, and Robin. I don't see villains working out when there are dozens of heroic characters that would get priority over them. Gharnef, Arvis, Zephiel, Lyon, and the Black Kinght are probably some of the better candidates among them.

No, Black Knight would be less interesting because there is little about him Ike does not already do and there are half a dozen swordsmen already. The fact that Sakurai would choose the theme of an two arc villain over say, the battle themes of the Crimean Royal Knights or the Greil Mercenaries shows that he is giving villains attention and Oliver would be interesting because he is an obese gonk convinced of his own beauty and would be the first Fire Emblem Light Mage playable.
No really, I would choose Ashera or Nergal before Oliver just because of their overall greater importance in addition to their move set potential but Oliver would be a fun addition.
Buldogue's lawyerI know. What about my posts suggests I need that explained to me? I did mention the major, more important than even the Black Knight, villains that drive the games first...okay except for Cervantes, I just chose him because of the sexy mustache but he's still got a more prominent role than Oliver and a more distinct moveset than the Black Knight.

Buldogue's lawyerI disagree. The most viable one would be King K. Rool, followed by Dixie Kong, then Cranky Kong. Even Lanky Kong would be more likely than Funky, he'd be more unique.
Donkey Kong rep? Rogue Hog
! Seriously though, I would just be happy with Dixie. I get why people want King K. Rool, I just really cannot get excited about him. It would be cool to see him wielding his blunder buss though.
