Metroid is a series that has been around for over 25 years and has twelve games. It's been constantly underrepped in Smash. No cuts are need. It deserves at least three slots.
It's meant to rep the concept of Samus outside her suit in Smash. Prior to that, there was only a trophy of Samus without her helmet on.
It helps that you can actually play as Zero Suit Samus in a Metroid game.

Are you really advocating OCs for the sake of Fanservice?
You did read the whole "costume makes him still technically playable part and helps prevent roster imbalance" and all that crap, right?

Simply adding a ponytail does not warrant a costume. It's not different enough. That's like making Fox's alt just adding a pair of shades.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMMaybe because it doesn't really have that many noticeable characters? Like, outside of Ridley and lets say that Samus and ZSS are one character, can you name two characters who are noticeable enough to be put into Smash? I think there has been something that the character has to have at least two games worth of figthing roles to be put into Smash (in most cases). I might be wrong on that, but keep that in mind.
Only sometimes postsSuper Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario RPG.
Besides, I put "In most cases) for that reason.
Also, there is the case of notability. Sure, Fire Emblem series might deserve more characters, but are there any really notable characters from the series which would warrant a spot aside of those who we ahve?

Only sometimes postsAs for OC for fan service? No, that was not my first suggestion, but I would rather have it than such jarring derail of Samus. For all anyone knew, Roy was an original character because he was in Melee before any other game. Push comes to shove, Nintendo could throw a character in and then release a game with them in it later because they have already done it. In a collaboration it may end up being more interesting in the long run anyway. Beyond not liking Zero Suit in principle, the moveset is pretty bland and confusing. Half of her actions involve the whip which was never used ever and one of her specials generic back flip/Inzuna kick.
(Might as well have just used Izuna but even an original character I imagine would have a more varied, original, set of moves)
Buldogue's lawyerThat's boring. That's a waste of a good costume. Costumes shouldn't be wasted on piddly minor differences that make the costume look 90% the same as the default.
It doesn't justify cutting Zero Suit Samus. That's the whole reason brought up Metroid being underrepped. It's a reason to not cut her.
And like Enlong said "If one is open o one-time characters, then there are some of the Hunters from Hunters or Corruption one could look at as well." So most likely Sylux for being the most popular of the Hunters and the possibilty of that ship at Metroid Prime 3's ending being the Delano 7 make it slightly more prominent than the other Hunters.
Ice Climbers only has one game, and there's no other characters besides them in it. Why the heck do you even think that's a fair comparison?
And each Mother game has a different protagonist. And there's only three games. The only ones who I can think of that have been in more than one game are Giygas and Porky; Giygas is an Eldritch Abomination cloud-face thing that wouldn't work, and Porky can't fight without his Spider-mech, which is too big.
Why am I even responding to this? It's so inane in how unfair these comparisons are.
Keyword here is "Generic".
You really don't give her enough credit.
Derail? Samus being like that has been a thing in the ending of almost all the games.
I don't really care about her either, but doesn't mean Metroid needs a cut.
Movesets can change, you know.
Kinda like how Captain Falcon could Falcon Punch before he was in Smash Bros, right?

That's not even comparable to Falcon Punch...
EDIT: Yes, I know the second part was sarcastic, but the first part wasn't.

Why have generic when you could have a character? Especially when "generic"
has negative connotations.
Also, I kinda get why you wanted a generic enemy for Metroid (because lack of characters), but a generic Kremling when there's King K Rool? Unacceptable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMMy entire post there was sarcastic. Do you want me to just outright state "THAT WAS A JOKE. HA HA HA. LAUGH" after every time I make a non-serious remark? Why would I in all seriousness state that? Thinking that Peach needs to have canon basis to have the ability to slap is just stupid.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.I don't like when people take things I say seriously when they're not meant to be serious at all. And I don't like when people try to tell me what I'm saying when I know that's not what I'm saying (e.g. "Yes, I know the second part was sarcastic, but the first part wasn't"—no, the whole thing was).
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Honestly, big-overreaction. Really, what I meant was that I wans't sure if the first part was sarcasm. I didn't notice the "apparently" part.
Gee, I sure haven't others do this to me before...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMIt just sorta makes all those moments where you say something in small text like "I can't believe people spent three pages arguing about X" really hypocritical when you are overreacting about someone simply misunderstanding you. Geez...

No enirely. Her hair style also changes, same as with the Boomerang Suit.
I have a message from another time...
