Because Gen IV has a rep and Gen II doesn't. So no Piplup. I can't really picture Froakie being playable.
No, I'm not bringing back Pichu.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMI feel like I prefer the lineup he's got is good as it is. But that comes from combination of just personal feeling as to the lineup, and liking what they did with the Silver Mountain fight in Gold/Silver, so I guess that's not much help.
edit: the Froakie line would make a fun Pokeball, if nothing else. Water Shuriken would be a visually ineresting attack.

As for why no Oshawott, because Dewott would be better, but I'm keeping Trainer's starter pattern from Brawl.
I'm sure Totes would beat Osha in a popularity poll anyway.
EDIT: Now I'm picturing playable Dewott as his own character. That would be a cool 5th gen rep.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMThey have some silly discussions
Interestingly, in one of the posts on that thread someone suggested a plausible reason as to why there was no Pokemon character reveal for X and Y.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMI just noticed Link has lips now. The lack of them kind of bothered me in Brawl. Did he have the ability to rapid stab in Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword or Between The Worlds? I know he did not in Wind Waker or Twilight Princess and it translated over into neither doing it in Brawl.
Marth should get his double swipe back too.

I too beleive that.
I'm kinda worried. I don't want Zelda to lose any of her specials, but there's no way this is not a special.
And if it's an Assist Trophy, I'll be kinda miffed that it's not Toon Style like Toon Link is. I mean, it's cool to see the Phantom in a different style, but it looks a lot more generic in a realistic style, and if it's an Assist Trophy changing it seems kinda pointless and a Toon look would look great.

An elegant whitish-pink. The armor shape helps determine the type of Phantom at use.
Hang on, I think I've got it. Compare this shot
◊ with this one
◊. I believe the second one is the same animation as the first, just a few frames later.
If I had to venture a guess, I'd say it looks like her jab, or forward smash, with a somewhat different animation. The latter shot being just after the sparkles disappear, but just before she pulls her arm back.

Huh, so they basically kept her Twilight Princess design, with only a minor overhaul of the dress.
You'd figure they'd at least have made her blonde again, since her two latest portrayals both agree on that point.
