Arguable. He's on the box, after all.
Like I said, he falls best under Donkey Kong for the Universe.
Notably, in a Donkey Kong-based episode in Saturdays Supercade, he's part of the Episode Greenhouse Gorilla. While this doesn't mean much, the creators could've been under the impression that he's the protagonist of Greenhouse.
What's interesting is that Mr. Game & Watch uses Stanley's weapon in Melee/Brawl, the bug spray. Greenhouse was part of the Game & Watch collection, so it's a neat reference. Also muddies whether it was really Stanley or a Game & Watch-style sprite of Stanley.(or Game & Watch himself based upon Stanley.)

"Pic of the day. Rosalina's got height! She is seriously tall! However, she boasts an anti-gravity effect, so she's very light."
No it isn't. Mario is:
- The flagship franchise of Nintendo.
- The face of gaming. Seriously, Mario is the most well known video game character/series of all time. Although I'd be fine if Pokemon only had 5.
Also, Brawl had six Pokemon characters. I think six slots maximum is good for the biggest franchises.
Were you echoing the poster of that thread I linked to or were you serious?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMI find importance t be a poor reason to have so many characters from a franchise. While some franchises can only field one or two fighters, I like things to be reasonably balanced. And Pokemon has only had, at most, four characters in a game.

"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"
Sakurai counts "Transformation" characters as the separate characters. So he counts Sheik, Zero Suit Samus and Pokemon Trainer's three mon as their own characters.
Quite frankly it's the best way to determine how many characters a series gets. How is it fair if some franchise gets like three characters for only having like six games while a franchise that has like 13 games has only two?
You know what franchises I'm talking about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMBecause in case of those two it would mean more same kind of characters?
I mean, yeah, you don't need to have Star Fox characters use pistols and reflectors and crap, but thats what they have done so far. Same way you don't need to use sword wielding lords or even weapon wielding lords or lords at all, but thats what they have done so far.
Better example would probably be F-Zero when you think about it <_< I mean since its racing game it falls to same category as Star Fox in that you need to make up the moveset almost completely. But since C. Falcon is only character used from it so far they haven't fallen into formula and cast in F-Zero is colorful enough for it to not just be "The series were all brawlers come from" :P I mean imagine Pico fighting like Captain Falcon, that'd be odd so if they would include him they would probably give him more fitting moveset.

Yeah, but didn't really care
I find it to be generally annoying when Mario characters get added(while it is true that there isn't any kind of arbitrary "limit" on how many characters can be added, new characters always require work and its not like they have infinite resources) since I prefer to see variety of different series instead seeing favorites from one of the series. Hence why I'm hoping for some really obscure characters. So I don't really care about number of games or popularity of them which is why I just pointed out that Star Fox and Fire Emblem playable characters tend to fall into certain formula unlike Mario characters it seems.
Edit: On the other hand, I DID misread your post and thought you meant completely the opposite <_<; But my point still stands as I don't really care about popularity of series either.

Mario didn't even get a new character in Brawl. In fact, it dropped one.
Granted, it was the best cut in the history of the series, but still...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMErr, just to note, technically Dr. Mario is spinoff in the same way as DK, Wario, Yoshi's island, etc are. It just has the thing with its main character just being alternate version of Mario that looks basically identical :p
But yeah, Dr. Mario getting cut isn't problem at all, he'd fit better as alternate costume anyway. I just used Mario as example, I would be annoyed if Mewtwo doesn't get back, but they would add two completely new Pokemon characters or if they would suddenly add dozen new Zelda characters.
I think someone on Miiverse said it best.
"zelda and pokemon have over 4 reps. no one bats an eye. mario gets a 5th rep and everyone losses their minds."

Dr Mario is a spin-off yes, but it's not comparable to DK, Yoishi and Wario getting their own series.
It's more comparable to Mario Kart/Party/Tennis/Golf/various spin-offs.
EDIT: Actually, it's more comparable to Mario Pinball/Picross and other smaller spin-off Mario games.

Yeah, she looked really weird being shorter in 3D World.
EDIT: So much butthurt about Rosalina on GameFAQs.
The third last post on the third page sums it up best.
Also also, this post is really insightful
, despite being on a thread with this name
.

I just can't get that passionate about this roster. People read so much into this franchise. Or maybe it's all due to the rumor about the 3DS version limiting the Wii U version.
I like Sonic, have ever since I was a kid. I would not write a paragraph in his honor if he was removed from Smash Bros.
And on another note, if Toad was playable, then who would be Peach's bullet shield? Toadsworth?
Gotta love how some people willingfully ignore the massive ammounts of gushing Rosalina has brought to the table.
Anyway... Holy cow is Rosalina tall. Do you think she would meet Ganondorf on eye level? I'd find that very appropiate somehow.
I was mostly refering to the guy saying that people that liked Rosalina only liked her for her moveset. Then again, GameFAQs...

"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."![]()

I honestly found Snake to be way more interesting than Sonic in Smash.
Also that same guy proceeds to say:

Don't kid yourself. If Toad was gonna show up, Sakurai wouldn't have posted that pic of the day for 3D World's release in Japan where it shows all four of the cast and Toad still being one of Peach's moves. If Toad was going to be revealed as playable, that would have been the time.
Also Toad would be the most boring Mario newcomer and if there is a sixth Mario rep for this game I sincerely hope he's not it.
And? It's not like any other newcomer wouldn't cause said character's fans to gush.
*cough* Ridely fans *cough*

I was wondering since he looks a lot like a Mario character and doesn't really fit with the modern DK franchise. Like, if they brought back the character, which franchise would take him in for Smash to categorize?
