Obviously, things may change upon release, but right now, it's simply just a "this character looks like someone I want to main" list.
We've seen enough of them that we can get a pretty good grasp of their playstyle.
Besides, Mega Man is a zoner and Rosalina is a puppet character. They probably suit me well playstyle wise.
Anyway, Nabbit 4 smash for

Insert witty 'n clever quip here. That's because they are their own thing. Separate franchises and all. Where they started off is irrelevant.(really, it all started via DK, not Mario)
Anyway, the Doctor Bros.(seems like an appropriate name, much like we had the Metal Bros.) would be a neat 6th slot. Not that there aren't some other neat choices too, of course. But this could bring something entirely different. I'm thinking they could borrow moves from the Mario and Luigi series as well. Like their Up B could be their Spin, their Dash could be their Roll from Partners in Time, and they could use their Firehand/Thunderhand for their forward Smashes as is. Or Forward B.
Shadow?
Not so sure about that. Adding a slot that boils down to two other playable characters but in a team is a reliable recipe for massive shitstorm, even if they do make them unique.

"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."Yeah, honestly, if we wanna get really technical here, Yoshi and Wario's series are spinoffs of the Mario series, which itself is a spinoff of the Donkey Kong series, which itself had another spinoff in the Donkey Kong Country series, which had a spinoff cartoon series produced in part by Nelvana, who also produced the Care Bears franchise.
What I'm saying is Tenderheart should be the next new fighter.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.@Elbruno: True. We've capped out at 5 Mario characters so far in Melee. If you count Bowser's transformation in Brawl(which does have a Mushroom Symbol still compared to his Smash Symbol in Melee), then 6. And discounting the bosses in Brawl, since they are not character files(unlike in Melee/64)...
I don't have a problem with 6 slots, and they already have 6 playable Pokemon characters, discounting the literal Trainer himself. To note, he does say 39 characters are playable in Brawl, not counting Nana. But I'm honestly not that picky about having a lot of slots per franchise. I think 6-7 is a good max slot number. Maybe 8(mostly for Pokemon). But 6 isn't bad either. I'd prefer 2 slots minimum for franchises that have more than enough characters to handle it. For instance, F-Zero, Mother, Metroid, Yoshi, Wario, and DK should easily have those. They're chock full of cool characters and can afford it. Game & Watch and R.O.B., not so much. Pikmin is slightly harder to say, as it does have a lot of characters, even if most are enemies(but it should have a boss at least).
...Should be obvious third parties aren't counted for Minimum 2 slots as well. XD
Shadow?
By that logic, you could say Waluigi isn't a Mario character and that he's really just from the Waluigi series.
(New Super Waluigi Bros. U comes out this Christmas.)
And, um, Mario IS in the Donkey Kong games. He's kind of the guy you play as in them (and the villain of one of them).

Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Yes, Waluigi is just an OC created for filler for a spin-off. He's been in zero Mario series games. As for the original Donkey Kong, that basically has zero relevance to the Mario series. He sort of debuted there, but the Mario series that sprang off it has absolutely nothing in common, except for jumping, and even that's different. Not even Mario's name or appearance come from it, they came up with that later.

So, I just watched the Nintendo Direct. "What madness is this, what kind of monster could destroy a warpstar?" Have to admit I did not see that coming.

Modified Ura-nage, Torture Rack

Because mechanically,, smash is fairly simple. If you've already played with a character, chances are you know if you like them or not.
It's also a mascot fighter, so you're kind of expected to pick based on who you like the best character wise.
