I dunno about playable characters, but the Elite Beat Agents got a trophy, despite not being officially released in Japan.
Ah, was their game never released in Japan?
I know that they're basically an international version of Ouendan, I was just wondering if it was recursive the same way Super Mario Bros. USA was released in Japan despite being an export game.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
Lucas was Japan-only.
EDIT: Great, now you've edited so I look like I'm not making sense.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyM@Cassidy: Japan's gonna get priority in terms of representation, though. Japan-only stuff will be referenced while international-only stuff is generally not going to be.
The point is that it isn't symmetrical when it comes to regional stuff.

I think the arcade Punch Out games hit Japan first. And the NES game was released over there first as well, but Mike Tyson was added to the international versions.
Mac also appears in Captain Rainbow, so it's to be assumed that old-school Japanese gamers are aware of him.
Another factor that helps Takamaru's chances for inclusion.

Didn't Sakurai actually say something about excluding Sukapon for some reason?
Meh, Sukapon hasn't even had a trophy in Smash yet. All he's had is a sticker. I don't expect him to show up in this game as a playable character.
