I rather like this
◊ picture. Looks like your typical adventuring party. You have the fighter, the wizard and her familiar and the... uh... monk.
List of characters who are close 100% certain getting in:
- The original 12 from the first game (pretty obvious, even Jigglypuff probably)
- All characters introduced in Melee and kept in Brawl (possible exception being Ice Climbers, due to difficulties)
- Wario, King Dedede, Meta Knight (Wario has his own series, and the other two are pretty important to Kirby)
- Zero Suit Samus, who's pretty much confirmed already
Possible cuts:
- Ice Climbers (as noted above)
- Lucas (possible, he's not quite as relevant now)
- Pokémon Trainer (personally don't think it's very likely, but it could happen)
- Wolf (he's somewhat important, but who knows? he's not that distinct visually or moveset-wise)
- Ike (he's kind of lost some relevance, and there's better rep choices for Fire Emblem)
- R.O.B. (it'd be a shame, but seems likely)
- Lucario (those who say "but he's a mascot!", remember Mewtwo?)

Mega Man is clearly the.. uhh... Red Mage! Yeah, that's it. Versatility and all.
"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"Falco is a clone of Fox. Wolf is almost entirely distinct from Fox. Falco is still extremely similar.
Also, Wolf was planned for Melee but not put in before he didn't want him to be just a clone. Want to know why he got in Brawl? Because he wasn't a clone. He has two identical moves at best and that's it. Landmaster and his Reflector. Everything else is different in design, regardless of similar names.(honestly, his Laser is as different as Samus and Link's Bombs)
I only see Falco having a chance to be cut if anyone in the SF series. Wolf is also a villain, something that evens out the hero/villain ratio overall. He might be less of a villain than he used to be, but he's still no hero.
Shadow?Mega Man is a Ranger, people.
Disagreed on both counts. He's more distinct in both aspects than Falco. Especially moveset wise, where his A moves are entirely different. Even his B moves are more distinct than Falco, with the exception of the reflector.
I have a message from another time...It was already mentioned that Falco was considered "safe" due to being a Melee veteran of sorts.
Not to say I disagree with the comparisons, but still.
"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyYeah, Falco being in Melee won't make him safe by default either. That's silly. Original 12 were barely hinted at being safe, and that only Ness at best.
Falco being almost entirely a clone and still one for the most part makes him the least notable. But I can't see either being cut since there's no reason to do so. They already went back to the original maximum of 5 Mario characters like in Melee, so having less Starfox characters seems ridiculous. I expect both to come back with Falco being a bit more different. Wolf's only change should be his Final Smash. He's fine otherwise.
Shadow? To be honest, I'd think that priority should be given to franchise representation based on importance to Nintendo as a whole. So Mario would likely be hugely represented because Mario is their first big franchise and arguably their most important one, as well as Pokemon because it is perhaps their biggest cash cow, the thing that pretty much sold Game Boy consoles, and a consistent record-breaker for highest game sales period. Additionally, the classic NES title characters in general would be given great importance, thanks to being key in their early years (e.g. LoZ, Kirbynote , arguably Ice Climber).
