I don't think it counts as a clone move if the character he is copying is not in the game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMNess is totally a clone. He looks nigh-identical, has identical powers ("PSI"), and most of his moves look just like Ness'.
For the same reason, "Dark Pit" would still be a clone even if you gave him a different moveset from Pit.
@Honey: I was just saying, whether or not you call it a "gimmick", it doesn't change the fact that more than one can share that "gimmick" and still be pretty distinct from each other.
That's because Dark Pit literally looks the same as Pit with a palette swap. Ness and Lucas look different enough.
It'd be possible to make Dixie/Diddy work together while not making them exactly like the Ice Climbers.
What you could do is make them act more like they do in their own games. Give them a move that lets them switch between being "Player 1," the one who's in control—basically like Zelda/Sheik or the Pokemon Trainer. But the other one, instead of just going off-screen after the switch, follows behind the one in control, and if they fall, you can't switch to them.
Essentially a transformation move that has the restrictions of the Ice Climbers' dual fighters gimmick.
"We're home, Chewie."Nope, he's "Ness, but blonde and without a hat". And he's almost literally the same character as Ness, he's an Expy of Ninten.
I was actually thinking they'd carry the other on their backs. That's what they did in DKC 2.

I agree with your second point, but not your first. Every other character plays solo aside from the Ice Climbers, and that's what makes them different. It's a quirky special feature to play as a double character. They "stand out" from other characters because of this. Gimmick shouldn't be seen as negative, honestly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMI think he meant in the context of the Mother games, where...yeah, his design is reminiscent of Ness's (the biggest change, colors aside, is indeed the lack of hat) and both are blank silent protagonists. I don't think he meant in context of Smash Bros.
Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.![]()
Well, at least as it's been so far, by checking the website every weekday and watching any new Nintendo Directs, you should get all significant Smash news.
EDIT: On another note, Sakurai's certainly been showing a lot of new stuff lately. Last week we got three new Villager attacks, a new Assist Trophy, and a new stage, and this week we've already gotten a new item. Hooray!

Welcome to th:|

You don't get that "two characters fighting together" is not a gimmick, do you?
