Honestly, the only ones I can see right now is Dixie(since she was planned), King K. Rool(a very important boss, and if not, he should be a boss in the adventure mode), and I'm hesitant on saying Cranky Kong. Although I think he should be part of a stage like in Melee/Brawl's Jungle Japes at the very least.
Cool old men with walking sticks can make pretty good fighting characters, actually. It'd be a neat variation on the regular "Old Age Kung Fu Masters" that appear. But this time, a bit different. Key difference is he'd have nagging taunts(like Sonic does) and an entirely different playstyle. I certainly wouldn't mind. XD His Final Smash would be turning into Giant Donkey Kong(with his NES sprite style from the original Donkey Kong Arcade game).

Shadow?I think "Mister Traveler" saying Quote is technically a spoiler would be more at home in a Steam face-off... even though he's starred more frequently on Nintendo consoles.
I'm not certain if Mario Finale is based on anything, but I certainly wouldn't change it: it's a Final Smash that embodies a Jack of All Stats like Mario. Good range, speed, and power, and easy to KO with. At the same time it's easy to dodge, but it's a good Final Smash for beginners to use.

Mostly why I said arguable. SMRPG has been referenced before, so it wouldn't be surprising.
DKC also indicates Cranky was the original Donkey Kong from the arcade games. His adversaries were Stanley the Bugman and Mario(first named Jumpman). I don't see how he's minor whatsoever, but pretty overall important. Especially now that he's playable for the first time. In other media, he actually is a main character, including some comics and the cartoon. Either way, he seems very important to me. I just prefer Dixie and K. Rool first, but Cranky is a very important character in the series, so he'd be great to appear.
On a previous topic, I don't think Sonic's Down Air is clearly Shadow's move from Sonic Battle. It could very well be them just extrapolating ideas from Sonic's general abilities. It's a move that feels very Sonic-ish, and I don't think it would feel out of place even if there was no precedent for it. Even though I'd prefer the Bounce Smash.
Not much else to say on that subject, just saying that it's not absolute.
Now, on Cranky. What do you think his moves would be like?
Obviously, he'd need his new cane hop move. I'm thinking Down B?
B could be him tossing an Orange Grenade from DK 64, or maybe a flask of exploding potion.
Side B... I'm not sure about this one. One thing that would be hilarious would be him getting in his rocking chair and charging forward on it. But that's just a random thought.
Up B: I'm not sure what would be good for recovery. A Blast Barrel? He did invent Diddy's Rocketbarrel Boost move, so maybe a variant? Squawks?
Final Smash would have him drink a potion to reverse aging, and temporarily turn into old-school Donkey Kong. Complete with limited graphical quality and barrel-tossing!
I have a message from another time..."In my day, we didn't have your 'combos' and 'cancelling'. We were only given punches and kicks and we made the best of them. Why, I bet these 'combos' aren't even real features! Just some mistakes a lazy designer passed off as a new feature. Next thing you know, you might be sliding all over the place and pretending it's a good thing. Ridiculous."
"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"Okay, maybe Cranky is he one who really needs a codec feature. 30-odd old-man rants bout how dumb these newfangled characters are.
"This kid with the wings? Bah. Used to think he was one of the good ones. Two games, both a sober 8-bits, with all the gameplay anyone really needs. And then he comes back 2 decades later, drowning in glitzy polygons and "rail shooter" elements and fancy "weapon systems"! Bah! Lost his dignity, he did. Shoulda stayed in pixels, where games belong!"

I have a message from another time...
in general Add a Take That! to some of the previous games' glitches, and you're gold.

Resetti is one of the most memorable characters in Animal Crossing, though. He's also one of my favorite Assist Trophies. He's just plain funny, and has no real bad effect on battle at all. He's not annoying like Nintendogs, and unlike the actual game he comes from, doesn't cause any real trouble. At worst, he might slightly block the view of an item or something like Snake's Down Smash. Which isn't a big deal, and just makes the game more interesting, IMO.
I really don't see any problem with him returning. Keep in mind a lot of the dislike isn't from what he says, but the fact that he halts your progress entirely.(except in New Leaf where he's easy to ignore) Sometimes to the point where it takes forever to shut him up. He doesn't do anything bad in Brawl at all. He may slightly hinder your view at best, which... isn't exactly bad. He's one of the weakest Assist Trophies in the game as well, if not the weakest. He's pretty much the Goldeen of Poke Balls.
Shadow?

I think... that is... possible. No more possible than any other character choice, though.
