I kind of imagined Little Mac working like that, though he was somewhat of a reverse-Lucario in my mind, becoming harder to kill as the match progresses, as opposed to Lucario just becoming stronger.
Since part of Mac's character is that he's a small guy going up against larger foes, he'd start off pretty frail, not being able to take too much before he could be sent flying. By generating Star Power (preferably up to three), he'd bolster his defense (to about mid-weight like Mario, maybe slightly lighter), speed, and recovery as the match progresses, allowing him to survive long enough to ensure he could regularly KO opponents. He'd only lose his Star Power if he KO's a fighter with the Star Punch, which would be one of his specials in this case, rather than losing them if he's KO'd.
I'd rather he'd not get stronger offensively if he had this mechanic though, since his needing to whittle opponents down with his weaker punches is a big part of the gameplay in the Punch-Out games and he'd always have to work harder to KO his opponents than they would to KO him.
Anyway, I think the Villager's weird rocket thing could still serve as a form of horizontal recovery, sort of like Luigi's Missile special.
Hmmm...I wonder if Villager's item-and-projectile grabbing ability might just be activated through the regular grab button.
Otherwise, I have difficulty seeing how they would fit all the abilities we've seen him use without any changes in the control scheme; we've seen what's pretty clearly his entire ground A-moveset, plus the fireworks, bowling ball, axe, tree planting, lloid rocket, balloon helmet, shovel, and grab. That's one too many to be covered by his smash and special movesets...

Welcome to th:|Pretty sure he's been seen jumping. Even still, no offense, it'd be kinda stupid if he couldn't, considering literally everyone else can. If you really wanna get technical, Captain Falcon can't walk in his games, but he can walk just fine here.

Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Oh, really?
Hm... he doesn't belong on Skyloft, technically, so he's not a stage hazard. There's not big NEWCOMER thing, so that's right out.
So yeah, I'm thinking Assist Trophy. Perhaps he causes random transformative effects, like shrinking or growing or turning into metal. Or maybe he drops he moon somehow.
I have a message from another time...

I always thought Star Punch could be an Up B move and he could gain stars as a special mechanic to increase recovery and knockback.
My idea to do it might be too complicated though.
