I'm inclined to believe the slap is from Super Mario RPG for two reasons: first one is that it's a one-two combo, and the other is the frying pan is one of Peach's moves (which there's no way that isn't a SMRPG reference).
I mean, in any other case a slap could be a generic move for a woman. In Peach's case, though, it's a part of her history.
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaIt is kind of silly, although Mr. Sakurai seems to throw in an awful lot of references with mere attacks (obvious example being Mario's AAA, and...
...the Villager's recently revealed Turnip attacks, which I must ask: does the damage fluctuate too? If it does, we may have the ultimate Confusion Fu fighter, what with tree planting and stuff.)
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaThe relevancy argument would only apply to a series like Pokemon, anyways.
And even then it's shallow.
Pokemon should be chosen for how they've been immortalised, not because of a fifteen minutes of fame thing.
@Second Sonic Character
Considering how Sakurai said he didn't want to go overboard on third parties, I'd really rather not double-dip from the same third party franchise.
Watch out Peach, you've got some competition.
The polygons on those look awfully sharp though.
And Kamek never fights in close combat yet I Can't Get Away with Nuthin' for saying that.
I dunno, Peach seems like the kind of character who would. Dainty Damsel in Distress who gets kidnapped in 90% of her appearances.
EDIT:
x7 This, basically.
You know, being able to punch is pretty much a given.
This makes me annoyed even more about how Toon Link's standard combo isn't based off Wind Waker's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMI know this is from like four pages back, but if we did get ten new characters and assuming every character from Brawl returns, I'd go with:
Welcome to th:|So do you think Mewtwo's gonna return, or will it be Lucario? Seems more likely for the latter, since making two Dragon Yoshis for the former wouls be difficult to program compared to a single Wario Man.
Yes, I am the guy who refused to call Magikarp Power "not worth the effort"Given the way Nintendo and Sega's relationship has developed as of late, this seems like far less a crazy possibility than it would have only a few short years ago.
I know I prefer calling him Dr. Robotnik.
Sounds a whole lot cooler than Eggman if you ask me.
Is he even really that popular a character?
Bowser Jr. has quite a fanbase and is pretty much the only major Mario villain left that could get in.(Kamek is a Yoshi-based villain, originating so as the mid-boss to Baby Bowser, who is specifically a Yoshi villain as well, so he doesn't count).
@MM: Nobody was serious about the Eggman suggestion. That's why nobody is defending it. We definitely were joking. Especially after 0dd1 pointed out he's just having fun here. People were serious about Kamek being a choice, which is why he's being defended. No more, no less.

That's also what I meant when I said "But seriously". I should've definitely added "But seriously, I'm joking around." I apologize for that.

Shadow?Could Spike from Wrecking Crew work as a good character? He was one of Mario's antagonists before Bowser. (and may have knew him based on WC'98) He might use attacks based on the series, using sledgehammers, dropping blocks and vaults on people, throw bombs and maybe even use a golf club.

I just chalk it up to the devs thinking "girly character —> girly attacks", and slapping is considered feminine for some reason.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.
