Of course he deserves to return. He just deserves a moveset with Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass gear.
It'd be nice if they decloned Lucas too. They're so close! Only three of his regular moves are clone moves. Most of the work would go to new specials and then he's done.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyM@Irene: It still ends up being somewhat redundant if Toon Link has a very similar moveset even though his set of games that he represents could of given him more options that that. It would have served to show the differences between the two Links in a more than visual way while giving them their own sets of strengths and weaknesses as fighters. They'd get seperate uses in battles instead of competing.
Agreed. Although Toon Link is specifically the Hero of Winds, so as cool as the Sand Wand would be, I'd rather not.
I can imagine how it'd work though. But the way it'd work is how I imagined PK Earth would work for Lucas.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMMany altered attacks/items which people commonly advocate for Toon Link are quite iconic to the series - the Hammer, for example, has been around since The Adventure of Link. Though regarding spin attacks - I would personally prefer the Hurricane Spin for a side-B, instead of a Final Smash.

...Personally, with regards to Lucas, I'd like to see a moveset on him that more accurately reflect how he plays in Mother 3. Like Ninten and Ness, he has high physical strength, and his PSI mostly revolves around healing and buffing, with one powerful (but inefficient, from the perspective of PP) line of offensive PSI. It'd be interesting to see how a Barrier Warrior-type character would work in a game series like SSB, I think.

It makes no sense!
You don't need the "toon games" represented separately from the "adult Link" games. They're all Legend of Zelda games. What, other than the art style, separates the likes of Wind Waker from the likes of Twilight Princess and Oracle of Time?
There might as well be an argument made that there needs to be a "Sprite Link" to represent the overhead 2D Lo Z games.
Personally, I'm not so sure that he does. The idea of having two Links strikes me as being in the same category of unnecessity as having two versions of Mario (Luigi aside) or two versions of Samus. Or bringing back Pichu (or introducing Richu).
Though it wouldn't be nearly as bad if he at least brought a different move set to the table.

Sailing, Princess Tetra, sailing, being at sea, fighting style, height, being on a ship. I only played the demo for Windwaker, but from a non-gameplay focused point of view, Smash Bros is all about bringing Nintendo's iconic characters into the spotlight. Toon Link, Windwaker, Windwaker HD, Four Swords - that was all some pretty heavy stuff, a definite shift for the series, the beginning of an era, the same kind of shift that Sonic 2006, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, and Megaman X were. So I think Toon Link qualifies.
Of course, then there's Paper Mario and Princess Rosalina, the latter whom fans are already asking for. Unlike Link, however, Paper Mario is still Mario, just with a different art style. Toon Link is an actual Link from another timeline.
It'd be cute if we had a stage that took place on one of the routes or towns. Or maybe a stage that takes place "inside of a Pokeball", and periodically, the ball gets thrown and the Pokemon is released. The players would be shrunken down, while two giant Pokemon fought in the background, and would eventually be returned to the darkness of the Pokeball...
...sounds graphically demanding. But come on, who doesn't want to see the inside of one those things? Or how about a stage inside of a Pokemon Center, or in front of one?

I picture it having sort of an odd aura to it, like a pinky haze- The Fairy type is a little Fairytale, a little The Fair Folk, a little Light 'em Up, after all.

I sure said that!Toon Link is not more a different type of Link than Paper Mario is a different type of Mario. Especially since the Paper Mario games are an entirely different genre from the main series compared to Mini Link merely coming from "another timeline".
Again, just about every Lo Z game has a different Link from the rest and the 2D Lo Z games might as well have different enough gameplay to justify a Sprite Link if Mini Link is going to be justified by a difference in gameplay and "timelines". Or we might as well have Prime Samus to go along with Samus classic given what you're saying about game shifts and era.

And then Sonic will turn into Were Sonic if hes on the course?
Actually, if Wolf howls there, his voice should echo more as an Easter Egg.
Shadow?

@Think I really meant that in the sense that the mere mention of Toon Link always seem to bring about this type of argument about whether or not he deserves to be included and about the role of clones in Smash in general.
