I do agree that I'd rather they just drop the 3DS version and let the Wii U version spread its elbows rather than limit it. I know that won't happen, it's just what I'd prefer. I was never keen on a 3DS Smash Bros. to begin with, it deserves a big ol' TV screen.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! It was still part of the same point, Beorc.
I'm just glad Sakurai is trying to make the characters key to both versions equally. Since that's how a game designer should do it since it's actually the same overall game, just on different systems. Smash deserves to be playable on handhelds too anyway. That's good for people who travel or who can't afford a giant TV, or don't want one. Handhelds are a good thing, after all.
I've had tons of trouble enjoying console fighting games because they're unwieldly for multiplayer too often for me. Handhelds? Surprisingly more effective in my case. Since this does apply to other people in general, having it on both systems is great for the majority of everyone. I just can't see a real problem here. I still doubt we'll lose Ice Climbers since Olimar was revealed, so unless it's outright said Ice Climbers are dropped, the complaints are ultimately in vain.
Shadow? Not to start up this debate again, but animations notwithstanding, this version of Ridley
doesn't seem too bad. It's a good enough model, but the animations are awful - aside from the neck, the standing pose is almost a T-stance.

...Yeah, how would that work with a Net? I mean, I could see that with a Fishing Rod...
If it's a regular Throw, it wouldn't usually have an Edge to grab onto due to its design. It's like banging a sword's flat edge against something to pretend you can somehow hold onto the edge with it. Not like thrusting it in. It makes the least sense overall.
I think he might mean that it's just an item/weapon being used to grab someone, or the fact it's a grab from a distance, just like Link(all of them) and Samus'.
Shadow?I was thinking honey.
It doesn't make much sense as a tether recovery, since it's not essentially a tentacle like the Hookshot/Clawshot/Grappling Beam either.
I kind of hope it's a Side B move, like Bowser's is. Fishing Rod is a better choice for a throw since it also gives us the ability to tether recovery properly.(or at least a way that slightly makes sense)
Shadow? He could grab people while in the air, making it unique from most Throws that are attempt in the air.(that is, based upon the Throw Button, not a Special Move that can Throw) Mind you, that was a movie, not actual gameplay. So it might not be an air move.
Also, it does remind me a bit of Samus/Link's. Ranged Grab. There hasn't been any other Ranged Grabs shown off, so what else can he compare it to? XD

Shadow? The pic in question, since it wasn't linked:
The problem is, "Grapple" isn't a term often thrown around in the Smash community. We use Grab(which means for both Specials and Shoulder Button-based inputs) and Throw on the wiki. That's it.
So it's not really that easy to tell what he specifically means. Could be a regular Throw. Could be a Special Move. He's too vague sometimes. :/
Shadow?Judging from the comparison I think it's a throw. Link looks like he's in his "I've been grabbed" animation, after all.
I doubt it's a tether, though, and that's the confusing part.
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaHe hasn't shown any of the Special Move throws yet. Which is why I'm hesitant to think his comparison means anything about it being an actual regular Throw.
The key similarity among Bug-Catching Net, Clawshot, and Grappling Beam is they all have range. That's it.
So does Yoshi's Neutral B. He's not shown back yet. What else could he compare it to in that case? I think the comparison is honestly purely a coincidence and nothing more. It could very well be a Throw or a Special Move. I'm leaning towards a Throw myself. It's possible it could be the first Throw Input that you can do in the air that actually can Grab an opponent. No other one can.
You can do Air Grabs with Special Moves only so far.
Shadow?Oh yeah, Yoshi's Egg Lay.
Hrm... I like the idea of an air grab (and if the Net is a special, it makes sense) but if Villager can chaingrab off of his own trees that way it would be the most overpowered thing since Meta Knight.
This is shaping up to be one if those things where our best option is to wait and see.

Well, here's an interview with Sakurai.
At that time, we could have chosen to develop a 3DS version only, but we realized the presence of several limitations. I am referring to the fact of playing a game like Super Smash Bros.. on a small screen. Thus, even if it is not easy to develop two versions simultaneously, we chose to adapt the game experience to the specifications of each platform.
I think the bolded parts make it pretty clear that he wasn't forced to make a Wii U version. And that, in fact, he wanted both a console and a handheld version, not one or the other.
