But we did get Otacon and Roy Campbell, and Snake's costumes make him look like Naked Snake. If you're saying that third-party characters don't get that many references. Hell, Megaman gets a mish-mash of several of his classic weapons, and the Yellow Devil appears in his trailer.

...Wait, where does this say Sonic must be Classic-based only? I know Mega Man is specifically classic moves. But how does Sonic apply when not all of his moves are Classic-based? See that Air Down A? Originated in Sonic Battle, a move called Shadow Rocket. It's an almost exact replica of it, except Sonic doesn't twist around during it like Shadow does. Sonic has a similar move in the game, but he doesn't do a dive kick itself.(but he also doesn't turn around) It's a neat mishmash.
Shadow? From what I was able to notice he pulled Sonic's moves from Sonic The Fighters. His forward+A is his donkey kick from that game, as is his PPK.

Now's it's Shulk Time!Sonic The Fighters as well. But that's a very old arcade game, not even modern. I think it appeared on the Saturn in Japan?
Also, Unleashed came out around 10 months after Brawl. I'm pretty sure it's not a reference to the game, as that's a really freakin' long time.
And even if it was, my key point overall stands; Sonic is not purely classic-based. Even if he saw the move in the Unleashed beta first, that's still a remake of Shadow Rocket anyway, since that's the first time a similar move was used.
Shadow?I didn't say to remove Super Sonic, though. I don't like him as much as I like other options, but he's a good choice as is.
That's all I could get from Cassidy's point, that Sonic should be classic based like Mega Man is. I may have misunderstood, though.
And regardless, the Wisps should appear since they're very unique and can add a lot to the game as is. Not for a Final Smash, but they can be items, used to change up Sonic's style, meaning elemental attacks(they could actually show the Wisp itself before it appears). How do I describe this? There's some games or attacks where they show the appearance of the character it comes from, looking like a spirit of them(meaning they're translucent or see-through), then does the attack). I think that'd be a perfect way to show off Sonic's newest abilities, or slightly changing up his moves. Like Sonic's Forward Smash could be electric-based now. For an example, anyway.
We're talking about movesets, not physical appearance. Physical appearances don't really mean anything anyway. Sonic can look like the classic one, but that doesn't mean his moves must be classic. Mega Man is the only character that just happens to have a moveset and looks based solely on the classic games.

Shadow? There's no point saying that Sonic has to be classic-based given that his character model is closer to his Modern incarnation than his Classic one, EDIT: and like you pointed out, his moves are borrowed from the more recent games.
And what was Sonic's first Nintendo appearance? The Olympic Games? Regardless, I've always wrapped everything post-Sonic Adventure together as "Modern Sonic".
EDIT 2:
Rewind.
Sonic shouldn't have a Wisp Mode over Super Sonic, that would be silly.
It's okay that he has a classic/non-classic moveset.
But trading a Super Mode for a more recent group of magical buddies is a bad idea.

It was actually Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. The remake of Sonic Adventure 1 came out later.
And exactly. It's ridiculous to think the character model will dictate a moveset unless they said so themselves. This only applies to Mega Man, as both of that was done purposely. It has zero bearing on Sonic, especially in Brawl. Didn't they already show off his Shadow Rocket-like move in For's gameplay video with him? That's a non-classic move as is, making the premise outright impossible unless they remove it for some reason.

And yeah, no Wisp Mode or whatever. That I agree with. Mind you, I'd prefer Ancient Light over Super Sonic since it can be a bit more original, but Super Sonic is an excellent choice for a Final Smash anyway. Overpowered, though, obviously.

Shadow?First Nintendo appearance was Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, if I recall right. Although I was probably Sheik'd.
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse Alberia[redacted] is basically like saying that part or all of some amount of text has been censored out.
Here, I meant it as shorthand for "I could say something to this, or explain it further, but to do so would only incite exactly the kind of thing I'm trying to avoid." Mixed with the joke of having it be censored out.
I have a message from another time...Really, you can just apply [redacted] to this whole thread and it would become like 300% faster. And less people insistently arguing the same points over and over again without recognizing the other side or changing their stance.
