Eh, the best games have gameplay as the final reward. That's part of what's made Sonic Adventure 2 so immortal to me: your reward was the retro remake of Green Hill Zone, rendered in SA 2's engine. Or Super Mario Galaxy, where the 120-stars reward is replaying it all as Luigi.
But those are different ways of playing the game that require being unlocked.
There needs to be a reason to play story mode that isn't the regular gameplay, because there are already several modes that do that. So the reward is obviously viewing the story. If you don't need to play the game to do that, then it's redundant and the time and money spent working on it are best spent elsewhere.
But that argument could be made for every other game with a story mode.
Story rewards could also be gameplay-based, however. New Game Plus is one possibility, or characters unlocked for beating single-player modes.
To put it simple:
Situation 1: I reward gameplay with addition to gameplay, like new stages or weapons or whatever.
Situation 2: I reward gameplay with THE VERY FUCKING SAME GAMEPLAY.
It's like saying, I reward making homework with making homework. Not just new homework, the homework you have just done. It's like saying, fulfillment is the reward of doing your chores, only worse, as your reward is having done that thing.
Even simpler:
EAT THAT DONUT. GOOD, YOUR REWARD IS THAT DONUT YOU'VE JUST EATEN.

Signatures are for lamers.Let's put it this way. You've just climbed Mt. Everest and then climbed back down. Your reward is that you have the option to climb up and down the mountain again.
Or, alternatively, you are sitting on a couch. Want a reward for sitting on that couch? TOO BAD, WALUIGI TIME!!
I really have no idea what I'm even talking about anymore, so I'll just say that I really hope Waluigi is playable.
Also, I really hope they don't include Ridley solely to troll everyone who wants him in the game.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Well then I COUNTER-counterspite by hoping C Di Ganon doesn't get in!
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Except the difference between Gameplay and Homework/Chores is that Gameplay is y'know, actually fun.
EDIT: Honestly, if your playing something in a game for PLOT-only...

Gameplay is not in and of itself a reward for gameplay! That's a cyclical argument.
