Olimar, Luigi, and TL were revealed coinciding with Pikmin 3, Dream Team, and WW HD, while Peach was revealed around the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., so it does seem to be a trend.
So I wonder if we'll get reveals for Pokemon XY and DKC TF?
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Every character's reveal so far(beyond the original characters including Mega Man and Wii Fit Trainer, although I may be wrong on those two) have been the same exact data as a game release.
MM and WFT were revealed during E3 hype, so I don't much count them towards this total.
The next game from a series already in Smash is Pokemon X/Y. Which Pokemon is hard to say. Every single one of the past characters(I'm noting exact slot numbers for the purpose of this statement) through Melee and Brawl(except Pichu) has something new in X/Y. Jigglypuff has a new type combo, Mewtwo/Lucario/Charizard have Mega Evolutions. However, Squirtle and Ivysaur don't.
IMO, the likeliness of who could be shown on the release date of X/Y is Mewtwo(two Megaforms) > Lucario(one Megaform) > Jigglypuff(a lowly retcon) > Pokemon Trainer(only 1/3 of his playable Pokemon have anything new in X/Y, meaning 2/3 of him isn't as relevant).
Of course, it could be a new Pokemon as well. Who knows?
Shadow?A Link Between Worlds is supposed to come out in November, I believe; so we may see something then.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."I'm betting it goes like this:
- Mid October: A Pokemon, no idea which.
- Late October: Sonic
- Late November: Ganondorf or Zelda. New Super Mario 3D World also comes out but we already have all the basic Mario characters. Maybe they could reveal Wario or something.
- Early December: Diddy Kong
- Late December: A newcomer? It will have been over six months and I feel like the end of the year would be a good time to announce the next newcomer to the game.
Next year(possibly, I'm basing this on games that are coming out then):
- Zelda(or Ganon, whichever wasn't shown) when we get a bit more info on Zelda U.
- Marth, see above but for the Shin Megami Tensei crossover.
- Yoshi, Yarn Yoshi
- Shulk or Xeno 4 protagonist when we get more info on that game.
- A rush of newcomers around E3. Possibly with a few veterans that weren't revealed yet.
Is Monolith Soft a second-party developer? I ask because, based on Sakurai's statements, I feel safe assuming that Sonic and Mega Man will be the only third-party characters in SSB 4.
"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"Monolith Soft is owned by Nintendo completely. It's like Hal Laboratory with Kirby.
The other two Operation Rainfall games are co-owned from what I can tell. That makes them less likely but it still seems like they could get in if Sakurai wanted them.
I'm pretty sure Snake and Sonic will stay at the very least. I wouldn't hold my breath for anyone else though.
I'm hoping for Sonic at the very least, if only so we can get a Worlds Collide reunion between him and Mega Man.
Square would also be the fourth third party I'd include but I'm unsure of who they could have. The obvious choice would be someone from Final Fantasy or Draqon Quest but there are tons of other cool franchises they could pick from if they wanted to. There's also the issue of FF and DQ having tons of characters that could potentially be considered important enough to warrant inclusion.
Square, huh?
You could cheat and use Geno, to avoid having to worry about the character fitting in with Smash.
A Final Fantasy character could be chosen, but there are so many that to choose just one would mke a lot of people disappointed. As much as I love them, maybe best to stick with Dissidia and Theaterhythm.
Maybe a hero from the Mana series could work, though Square hasn't touched that for a while.
And I will here make mention of Dragon Quest, and request that we not discuss specifics as to who would be from there, as it is one of Those Topics (TM)
I have a message from another time...

They seemed to fail to realize that TL's overhead slash was his F-Tilt in Brawl.
