Hero is probably the only character in the roster I'm actually disappointed in. And that's due to the unfortunate combination of being a franchise I don't care about, bringing very little interesting side-content with them, lack of English VA making them feel incomplete, a moveset that feels derivative from Link and Robin, and the RNG bullshit in critical hits and the Down-B.
Everybody else has something worthwhile to me, though Terry and Kazuya cut it pretty close; I don't like how the fighting game controls are implemented in Smash.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!![]()

There's not a single new character I don't believe that shouldn't be here. They were either excellent or phenomenal choices. Although I do have to agree that Dragon Quest does push it. I could nitpick the hell out of Banjo & Kazooie & Min Min but they're still very fun to play. Scummy tactics aside.
Why does Hero not having an english voice matter even in the minor, it's not like he says words anyway...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I felt nothing at Steve. Not happiness. Not disappointment. Just...."oh. Ok."
Byleth was eye rolling, especially being the copy/paste reveal of Corrin. However now I enjoy playing as them. I don't like female Byleth as her fan service is too distracting.
Sephiroth was a happy shock, Sora was jaw dropping and Banjo Kazooie still brings a big dumb smile to my face every time I rewatch the trailer.
I had no attachment to Joker but I love that he is in the game and doesn't stick out as not belonging. Terry is really fun. Hero is nice but I prefer Erdrick as the default. Pyra and Mythra are fun and great additions. Min Min is meh meh.
But Kazuya. Something is weird with him. It feels like the Smash fanbase talked about him for a week and moved on. At times, it felt like the fanbase acted like he wasn't on the roster. I didn't see people integrate the Tekken material into the Smash lore and fanon like the other franchises (like animations, comics, things like that).
-Witty line-Byleth also made me feel something towards the Fire Emblem haters. ...What's the word I'm looking for, Hubert?
I too would've liked Twintelle from ARMS for the melanin, but I can see that Min-Min made sense.
The sad, REAL American dichotomyI find it a bit strange that you say F!Byleth is distracting with fanservice when the Aegis are from a game that's listed under the Best Known for the Fanservice entry.

Get taxed. Idiot.
I think its because of male Byleth. So when compared, Female Byleth stands out more and it makes the fanservice style stick out. Or if Female Robin was design like that while Male Robin was the same. It feels like it's an unnecessary fan service addition, especially when it wasn't the same for both genders.
Well, Fanservice can be pretty subjective. Not to mention the double standards that come with it.
They're also somewhat different characters with unique names(in Japan), so they weren't just only a gendered counterpart. Thus, being designed with different thoughts makes a bit more sense.
Not saying fanservice in mind is a good thing or anything like that, but it's not the same thing as Robin or Corrin.
Shadow? All true. I think it's just how un-fanservicey male Byleth is presented, so Female Byleth's more fanservice design just doesn't look well to me. It's like the Halloween costumes that sexy up usually unsexy jobs.
And I actually hate Mythra's original design. It looks like it was trying too hard.
-Witty line-Corrin has the same problem as being designed and named differently from the male version?
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I think it’s because he hasn’t played AR Ms. I think it’s as simple as that.
His mentality was that the DLC should only have characters that are talked about commonly.
Now, I don’t know if he’d have thought the same thing if my most wanted (Neptune) got in, but I know he’d say that he’d be happy for me regardless.
(As for why I mentioned Paper Mario, namely because I was thinking of what first party characters he’d be okay with right off the bat.)
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!I just remembered what I was going to type regarding everyone forgetting Kazuya exists. My guess probably has to do with his complexity and they didn't want to put in the effort to learn him.
Get taxed. Idiot.
x5
The Smash community has the biggest Fan Myopia so I appreciate the clarification.
You're the only guy I've met that I completely agree with when it comes to that topic.

The backlash against her design that I've heard has to do with how impractical it would be for battle, especially in the places where it's made sexier than male Byleth's.
Usually I'm all for Bare Your Midriff on a badass sexy warrior, but I can get that it might seem a bit much given everything else she has going on. If she had just one of:
Then it would be more acceptable. But all four is overcomplicated and a bit of overkill.
I think the implementation of Byleth was perfect for also allowing for the house leaders. That way if I want to play as a close approximation of Edelgard or Claude I still can!
It would've been nice if the two "fused with Sothis" costumes were instead recolored to represent Rhea and Yuri, though.
The sad, REAL American dichotomy

While I definitely was a little disappointed some of the characters I wanted to be playable didn't make the roster, I don't think I was actually disappointed in any of the characters we did get.
If I had to say which characters I was the most excited for, I would have to say Byleth and Sora.
