In context, people were waiting on Animal Crossing news, so I suppose it was to fake them out (doubly so, given that New Horizons was announced right afterwards).

Yeah I consider Isabelle really weak in that it's so drawn out.

I personally didn't feel like it was "drawn out," since the trailer itself is shorter than King K. Rool's trailer. But we can just agree to disagree.

One part I really do like about Isabelle's trailer is that moment where she and Pauline do the "hit the block" pose together. That bit always brings a smile to my face.

Speaking of trailers featuring the envelope, I also like Terry's trailer a lot, even if I'm not familiar with Fatal Fury or King of Fighters games.

I will defend Byleth as a character but their trailer was abysmal. The slow chatty cutscene style did not work well at all for Smash.

I swear Byleth's trailer was intended for a Direct or even the VG As.

I actually like the Byleth trailer. I just thought people were pissed because of the jabs.

If their intention was to bait and switch the audience, then Byleth's trailer is super awful and weirdly utilized

I still find it funny that Byleth decides "they can't reject me for being an anime swordsman, if I'm a woman!" And then Sothis finds it Actually Pretty Funny, and grants them more non-sword weapons. It took me way too long to get that.

Yeah, while I like Byleth's trailer, it definitely seemed more like something that should have been in a previous announcement instead of being the announcement for a character.

Just put it in a direct or the 2019 VGA and you can make it a fakeout for info on 3H's DLC, only to pivot and show that it's Smash.

People would still be pissed because Fire Emblem and Swordfighter, but it might have gone over better then the extended guessing and DMC having an announcement the same day (Though we would have lost the "What the Hell is this?" meme)

As somebody who was disappointed by Byleth for all of five seconds but still dislikes the trailer, I think a lot of it also had to do with them using Three Houses' animation style instead of Smash's. It doesn't feel like there was a lot of point since we all knew it was a Smash announcement, and the animation is... too clunky to really flow well, but not retro-styled like Terry's where it's a fun homage. It works fine for what Three Houses is, but for a Smash announcement, it makes the whole thing feel unpolished.

Of course, that's also aside from the general reasons why people would be disappointed with the pick.

Heck, I'm not very fond of Pyra/Mythra's trailer either but it was still tolerable because at the end of the day, the Xenoblade team is much better at cutscenes than the Fire Emblem team.

Worth noting that both games' animated cutscenes were outsourced to external animation studios. So... I guess the point still stands, really, but saying "the Xenoblade team" and "the Fire Emblem team" feels misleading.

Weren't both Corrin and Byleth's trailers just cutscenes lifted from their respective games that were slightly repurposed to serve as Smash trailers?

They aren't reused footage if that's what you meant; they were both unique animations meant as Smash Bros. Reveal trailers.

Corrin's is reused footage. The only difference is the in-engine menu screen adding a fourth option.

Byleth's includes new footage; all the stuff with Sothis is new, and obviously Byleth flying out of Solon's trap with a glowing Smash logo is new as well, as is Solon's stunned reaction when it happens a second time.

Fans hyped that up themselves.

I remember being in the camp that figured that, if anything, that was a point against Dante's announcement that day. Not sure I said anything about it, but really, the whole company playing chicken with an NDA like that? Yeah, right.

Byleth's trailer also suffers from the problem was that there were no other characters interacting.

Instead of Sothis, it should been Kirby wearing a Sothis wig sitting on the throne or something. Trailer would have been instantly better.

Also the dumb envelope. lol

I'm surprised after all this time and after being in the series since the first game that they never made a Master Hand amiibo.

That would've made no sense.

Huh. I don't get interested in Amiibos, so I never noticed. So I assume Crazy Hand, Tabuu, and the SSE bosses don't have them?
I still think it'd be cool if Tabuu was the final DLC character, though of course there's some characters I'd prefer to get in instead.

I think I will bow out of speculation to the lead-up to character 11. It's going to be a fandom bloodbath.

I basically stay out of them to begin with. I tend to have my expectations set to the lowest level when it comes to fighter's pass announcements, and it usually ended up with my prediction of someone I'm unfamiliar with being accurate. The latest was the exception, not the rule.

On a different note, it's still impossible to have music on a stage from a different franchise, right? I would have loved to implement a custom spirits-esque battle or my own idea for a classic run-through, given how cliche some of them are and how there were many missed opportunities.

Other than any song being available on the Smash originals and a handful of Mario songs on Yoshi's Island (Melee), no.

The sole thing that disappoints me with how Ultimate does music is that songs from the Other category can no longer be played on stages other than miscellaneous stages. No Tetris A on Luigi's Mansion or Golden Sun final battle on Norfair like you could in the previous two games.

Honestly for me character speculation is gonna be a warzone because of how entitled some people in this fanbase are.

I really just like to state who I want in the game and leave it at that.
