I do think that a Composite Character is the best way to represent Spyro as unlike most major gaming icons, there is no definitive “canon” Spyro.
The Spyro fandom has an extremely large Broken Base, effectively being 3 separate fandoms in one.

Reignited Trilogy wasn't released in Japan tho. A shame, as it could have worked; perhaps the old "demo alongside a Crash game" approach?
Crash is doing fine and may be getting a game this year, but, all in all, Spyro is more intensive; it just HAS to have larger levels.
And, in any case, their classic approaches are the ones that seem to be here to stay. I can see perhaps Cynder making it into the reignited canon, but Legend as-is, is likely gone.
Crash used to be the best selling western game in Japan until Spiderman PS 4 so hey he has that going for him
Uni catI love how Orville and Wilbur are both Falcos, although it does highlight that we only have him as a stand alone bird character and no, Samus doesn't count.

Crash has a similar Broken Base, although I think the CTR remake has helped to mend that by acknowledging pretty much all of the games. I do agree it's weird they didn't release the Spyro Trilogy in Japan... It would have been a good chance to win the crowd.
The reason why Spyro didn't catch on in Japan was pretty much because they had to change the camera system as Japanese gamers were apparently slower to catch on to camera controls.
Conversely, that I think played a part in why Crash appealed to them because Crash didn't require camera controls at all.

I heard that it was released, just not localized. Though that’s hardly any better.

My musician pageStatus is hardly a consistent indicator of potential Smash fighters, but Crash does strike me as a more significant character than Spyro, even putting aside their respective results in Japan. The Bandicoot's role as the Sony Playstation mascot (even though his games were always third party) made him, however briefly as visible as Sonic and Mario in his time.
Magazine covers like this
◊ illustrate just how big Crash quickly became as both a character and a franchise. Between that and the aggressive marketing of his games towards Nintendo, it could be argued that Crash arguably took the role of the cooler, more rebellious Mario rival away from Sonic for the latter half of the 90s.
Spyro was and still is popular, but he was not the face of a console generation in the same way Crash was.

I’d rather keep Legend of Spyro away from Classic Spyro, especially since, even if there were any chance Spyro would be selected, it would definitely be his classic form on account of being the only branch of the franchise currently alive.
