Everyone is definitely in the game to sell other things at the end of the day, true. X and Y hadn't come out yet when Greninja went into development and a similar story was told concerning Sakurai needing to look at concept art and designs to get a feel for the character.
Still, Pokemon is the biggest multimedia franchise in the world, and Mario's the biggest video game franchise in the world, and both present a generally diverse, distinct selection of characters to choose from in Smash.
Fire Emblem doesn't come close to either and yet it's somehow the 3rd most represented franchise in the game, with a very uniform selection of characters who largely look and play the same.

In that sense, even the other DLC could be seen as walking advertisements. The Hero? Dragon Quest XI was getting a switch port in the next several months. Banjo Kazooie? Microsoft probably wouldn't mind getting some otherwise diehard Nintendo fans to pick up an Xbox for the sake of some Banjo. Even the KOF and Fatal Fury games that had been ported to the switch could get a boost from someone like Terry getting into Smash, and probably did.

I think I would have preferred a Byleth with more of a Stance System than what we got.
At the very least, their Smash attacks could have had the Peach/Daisy property where it would be Sword, Lance, or Axe based on the direction you move the stick in while charging.

Small thread showing that the Twitter thread linked at the bottom of the last page leaves a LOT of things out.
At this point everyone and their Grandmother
knows why people are or aren't mad about Byleth.

From one of the twitter threads:
That's incorrect; Marth and Roy were originally supposed to be Japanese Exclusive characters because Sakurai knew they had no appeal in the West. But because Melee was rushed, he couldn't remove them from the Roster for Western Release, and that is why we have Marth and Roy in Western Smash. Obviously, by Brawl or even Ultimate we would've gotten at least Marth in western releases of Smash, but this part is just wrong.
jfc, a good number of your posts, for *days*, have been exaggerating and mocking other people's reactions way out of proportion.
It's more noticeable with you than with anyone else, and you had been called out on it before.

I believe we've established that cartoonish levels of spite over this children's video game is how we're supposed to roll.

Look dude, the salt about Byleth has diminished considerably. We don't need a HOES MAD reminder every two days. And what has FE have to do anyway? I don't hate the series, i hate the smug people rubbing the supposed salt in other people's faces. That is annoying and borderline against the rules so stop it.
Uni cat
I agree with you, but the salt is real, and just as annoying.
And on that note,

The sad, REAL American dichotomy

^People acting like Nintendo has to earn the right to put their own characters into their own video game baffle me. "Walking commercials"? No one gives Ness crap for being a "Trojan Horse" for a game that was regarded as a failure when Smash 1 came out, or Lucas for coming from a game that still isn't available in English. F-Zero X had only been out for a year when Falcon was introduced (yes, I know the original came out in 1990), and Kirby's introduction served to hype up Kirby 64 the year after Smash 1 was released.
People are plenty allowed to dislike Byleth, Three Houses, Fire Emblem, or any of the above's inclusion in Smash, and it's all entirely fair. People can like or dislike things as they please. But that argument in particular doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
It's been fun.
