So Smash is known for ending its rosters on.......less popular choices, at least compared to the other reveals. The beginning roster picks are mindblowing, the middle selection is hype inducing, and the end characters are meh.

Could this be considered Ending Aversion?

Oh, not just DLC. Every Smash roster since 64 has ended on characters that weren't on the same level as the others, such as Brawl with Snake, Sonic then T Link/Wolf. Would Ending Aversion only fit storyline examples?

I'd say the cast was pretty consistently solid up until 4, but that might be Nostalgia Goggles talking.

I’m gonna have to disagree with you there. I believe that Melee has the overall worst selection of newcomers in the whole series.

Melee? I don't know. Bowser, Peach, Ganondorf, Mr. Game & Watch, Ice Climbers... I don't really like Melee much, but it did have a lot of winners.

Of course it also started the trend of blatant snowclones with things like Dr. Mario and Young Link. But even those I've warmed up to.

I know the anime swordsman argument is cliche at this point, but I mostly enjoy Smash's weirder, more cartoon-y character choices and it feels like we've been getting fewer and fewer of those as time goes on (exactly one with this past Fighter's Pass, Piranha Plant, and 3-ish core newcomers?)

The thing I like about Smash is that there's a genuine possibility for characters who don't have contemporary anime inspired designs to make it in, so seeing a disproportionate number of contemporary anime style characters fill the roster isn't my thing.

tldr: kind of agree that the cast was more balanced and appealing up until For.

What really bothers me is that with stuff like Dragon Quest we could have gotten a funner, more interesting character. Things like the beloved Slime or Torneko the merchant, who both star in their own sub-series. Instead we just got Hero. I very much like that the series is represented, but I'd prefer they picked a better representant.

I mean. You can argue that other characters might have been more interesting to play, but Smash is just as much a celebration of video game history as it is a fighting game. In that sense, did you really think they were going to go with anyone but the Hero in terms of representing an entire franchise?

It's just as unrealistic as saying Athena should have gotten in over Terry purely because she'd be more interesting or funner to play. Which was a somewhat popular contrarian opinion before Terry was officially revealed.

Slime is more iconic, I'd say. The hero changes every installment. The Slime is a mainstay.

The sword complaint doesn't hold much water since swords are a very common weapon to use for heroes. Dissidia's original roster on the heroes side was all swords. Countered the villains side for being mostly magic users

Well lets see:

Anime: Chrom, Simon, Richter, Ken Joker, Hero, Terry, Byleth

Cartoon: Daisy, King K. Rool, Isabelle, Piranha Plant, Banjo-Kazooie

Cartoonish anime: Inkling, Incineroar

I dont know where to place Dark Samus and Ridley

Ken Joker is my favorite Street Persona character.
