Yeah, no, Dracula and Marx evolving are the only sticking points with having a complete gallery of Spirits. All Summon-exclusive Spirits can be acquired using Spirits from the Spirit Board or shops just fine.

On that note, I'd recommend sacking your summon fodder ahead of time instead of only when you're about to use them for summoning. That way they get added back to the random Spirit pool.

I’m not doing anything with the board until getting through my second World of Light playthrough. But I’ll keep that in mind.

I just did some testing with some spirit elements. I used a maxed-out Giratina as my primary spirit and gave it the Samus' Gunship spirit to test what gets boosted by energy shots. I then made a control setup with Giratina + Ricky + Rock Mario (to get the stats as close as possible to the raw stat boost of Giratina + Gunship). Finally, I made duplicates that swapped out the Ricky spirit to test for PSI (Spirit who Loves Surprises), magic (Ivan), electricity (Zapfish), fire/explosions (Henry Fleming), and Aura (Yama).

Apparently, the shadowy powers associated with Mewtwo and Ganondorf are not PSI (not boosted by The Spirit who Loves Surprises) or magic (not boosted by Ivan). Both are treated as Fire (boosted by Henry Fleming).

Also, "energy shot" is very specific. The only things I could find that work with Samus' Gunship are the Samus' charge beams (not even Dark Samus' other energy attacks - those are boosted by electricity spirits like Zapfish), ZSS' stun gun (her plasma whips are electricity, not energy), the spacies' blasters, ROB's laser, Mega Man's lemons/charge shot, and the shotos' Hadokens. Do note that some of these double-dip - for example, Wolf's blaster does is also treated as electricity.

I have no idea what Link's remote bomb blast is supposed to be. It's not energy, not an explosion, not magic, not energy, not electricity, not PSI, and not aura. All of those did the exact same damage as my control setup (which gives physical boosts only).

Mewtwo's Shadow Ball and Ness' PK attacks are not not counted as energy. This means that officially nobody I commonly play is helped directly by the adult Isaac spirit's energy shot boost. At least Isaac has great stats and three slots :/

What about the Mii Swordsman's shurikens? Do those count as energy shots? If not, the Isaac Spirit is completely incompatible with the Isaac Mii Fighter.

Yea, I'm not very good at reading instructions so applying some of these skills confused me when it came to Ganondorf.

[up][up]I checked just now. None of the elemental booster spirits seem to buff the shuriken of light. The game treats it as a physical shooting/throwing weapon (Giratina + Ricky + Roll Casket; same total power as my control setup, and Roll Casket boosts things like bows and boomerangs). I was hoping that would also solve the mystery of what Link's remote bombs are supposed to be, but alas, Roll doesn't help that move either.

[up]It's not on you. The element system in this game is rather unintuitive.

It's really weird that they gave the Isaac Spirit an effect that doesn't work with the Isaac Mii Fighter. The Isaac Spirit's effect doesn't even actually fit Isaac the character, since Energy Shot seems to be an energy gun exclusive boost.

The Miis only get affected by the Mii spirits such as Dark Emperor and Party Phil, not the spirits in the other section.

Random question: if you end up on the Tomodachi Life stage online, does everyone see their own Miis, or does it pick one person’s and show them to everyone? Because that happened to me and I want to know if everyone else in the room saw my Miis.

It’s nothing bad or anything - they’re all modeled after existing characters for Mii Fighter purposes, and only one of them is particularly recognizable anyway. It’d just mildly embarrassing, since I didn’t choose to show them off if I didn’t play as them.

Ganondorf's moveset is not a F-Zero one. It is a Smash one. And more accurate to his in-game depiction than Captain Falcon, who doesn't use fiery martial arts to drive a car.

Seriously, Falcon got his moveset the same way Ganondorf did: It existed in Smash, and had the body shape for it.

Are there any stories about how the initial roster was chosen? The initial eight are fairly obvious picks, as is Luigi. Jigglypuff was hugely popular at the time but still an odd choice over something like Squirtle, Charizard, or Mewtwo. And Captain Falcon and Ness are both characters I don’t think the majority of people were familiar with at the time. I don’t think I even knew where Ness came from until I was playing Brawl years later.

The secret 4 are all model swaps with Ness being the most unique of the 4.

Falcon took one of the movesets from the prototype Smash game and stuck around.

The original 8 were Nintendo's biggest franchises. Two of the Secret 4 were either surprise inclusions from other Nintendo series, Luigi was there because Mario was (he's always gotta be in a Mario game somewhere), and Puff happened to be popular at the time (due to an episode of the Pokemon anime that aired not long before) and had a convenient base model.

[up] x8 EarthBound (well, MOTHER 2) was pretty huge in Japan, so his inclusion isn’t too nebulous. It just sold terribly in the west after a disastrous marketing campaign.

There were others planned. Bowser was supposed to be in. Mewtwo was one of those, alongside King Dedede and Marth. Budget, asset and time constraints were a big factor. Hard to imagine now but Smash Bros was a quick, low budget game that was never meant to be big. But it was a Sleeper Hit, and the rest is history.

I think Wario also was considered for 64. Or was it Melee?

Can you imagine if Marth was around since 64?
