I like how Sakurai said not to expect too many newcomers and we already have 8 with more to come. He said that the full roster will be released before launch, so odds are any Directs till then will have something about Smash, even if its just an echo reveal.
Its weird how echoes are seen so positively now compared to the previous games. Is it because they are upfront about them from the start? Let's get more.
There was a pie chart image of character fan popularity that was commonly used by people as a stand in for the ballot results. Is that available as the newcomers definitely have a fan popularity feel to them?
Dark Samus being an Echo is the best thing possible for her purely because of her high visual resemblance to Samus. If her moveset was too different from Samus it could be rather confusing having to deal with both of them in the game, and since she isn't just a skin that means that she's still diverging from Samus.
Hence my own personal theory that the total count before DLC would be 89. And by reversing the number, you get 98. It can refer to the year Super Smash Bros was born from development, 1998. A perfect way for the anniversary to come full-circle
89 characters. Crazy.
Add the fan favorites. Isaac, Geno, Lloyd, Dixie, Skull Kid, etc. More villains. Give Yoshi and F-Zero another rep. There might be a reboot for the next game, so the roster would be slashed greatly, so let's add as many now.
People are cheering on 'Everyone is here'.......until they hit All-Star mode.
'Everyone is here.......shit.'
I'm not saying that it's not the best we could hope for. But still, a little bit more divergence could work. Guess we'll have to see if she's anything but a floatier Samus.
All Star needs some retouch so the stages aren't bloated with fighters.
However, I'm quite sure we'll be fighting the characters in numerical order, so there will be fewer ocassions for the bloating that happened in Smash 4.
Franchise fights ala Brawl would be nice as well.
I feel like expecting 89 characters before dlc is being really greedy, and unlikely
I have no doubt there will be 89 playable characters. All they have to do is split the Bowser Jr and Yoshi alts into Echoes and they'll be set.
True. Its alot of characters. It was more like a fascination than a desired want.
I bet that there is another Smash Direct or Smash segment around October to discuss the modes and whatnot. That will probably be the next reveal, a newcomer and echo. All speculation of course.
But what if turns out to be a good number in the end?
And what if it isn't?
Then there may still enough newcomers, most being less than expected.
They said in the Direct that they plan on unveiling all newcomers before the game's actual release. No doubt Sakurai's got a few more tricks up his sleeve, but I'm not gonna hazard a guess as to what. It seems like the man can do whatever he likes.
That said, I can see the roster maybe getting to 80. 3 more unique fighters and 4 more echoes would be all it would take.
Oh, my god, you keep saying "but what if it happens", and there's just no good answer to that question. It's either "well, than I guess that happens", "that would be good, I guess", and "that seems unlikely". There is no scenario where "but what if it happens" leads to a full conversation, and it's so annoying and contrarian.
When someone says "this isn't going to happen", responding with "but what if it does" is completely inane and stupid. You're not presenting any new ideas, you're just pointing out the obvious: that no-one knows anything for sure, and you're using that to push wildly unrealistic expectations.
And they are unrealistic. 89 characters?! 89?! The game currently has 67!! 73 if you factor in the Echo Fighters. Expecting 16 additional characters to be announced before the game's release is one of the silliest things I've ever heard. I think 10 more characters is pushing the limits of what's realistic, much less 16.

but what if it does, though
I'm with on this one. "What if it does" is annoying, contrarian, and worth nothing for an active conversation.
73? Wow, these echoes are throwing off my numbers. I didn't realize we were that close to 80.
SAKURAI ON SMASH BROS. BEING A 'DREAM PROJECT,' KEEPING THE GAME OPEN FOR ALL GAMERS, CONTINUING WORK ON THE SERIES, AND MORE
We honestly don't deserve him.
x4 Same. There's being hopeful and there 's being blindly (perhaps even naively) optimistic. And saying "But what if it does?" in this context feels like the latter.

Simply put, Luigisan is the Mulder and we're the Scully.

Just wondering about it. That's all...
Well, you know about as much as we do. There isn't really anything that we can tell you, because we're all eagerly anticipating new information as well. Like I said before, being optimistic isn't inherently a bad thing, but it's important to keep your expectations in check.
There's also Luigisan's perspective, which seems to be "anyone who disagrees with my unrealistically optimistic opinions is being unhealthily pessimistic, and they need to cheer up so they can agree with me". Like, no. It's called "realism". It's being realistic. It's a better middle ground between optimism and pessimism.
