Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.

     Eddie's old post
Looks like we have a big page lock coming. Big in the sense of many pages and big in the sense that the pages to be locked are too big.

It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine

They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.

I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Ugh... If only I hadn't turned the computer off 10 minutes earlier. I don't know whether it's a fault on them acting boldly, or me not posting on the discussion page (as far as I remember if I only posted here when I wanted to split it would typically be the only venue I'd post in, I'll change that in the future). I don't feel like reverting because this is technically what we wanted, I guess. I at least agree with the idea that the Let's Go characters shouldn't have their own pages. As for the replace Magikarp with Gyarados idea, I'd still rather try and split all Gen I to four pages because I think it would ensure a not too long and hopefully equal size for all of them.

the best way to split the pokemon protags/rivals page would be by generation like any other pokemon page so the thinking is right. However the issue people seem to have is that because there are so few protags per gen, we have a lot of tiny pages.

I think the best way to lump them is by generation (i.e. Kanto - Sinnoh for one page, Unova - Galar for the second.) rather than by class (protags for one page, rivals for the other)

This works for a couple different reasons

  • keeps the protags and rivals that interact with each other together.
  • Sometimes there are tropes that directly relate them due to their rivalry and wrk better if the context for all that is on the same page
  • sometimes there's a team dynamic between them like being a Power Trio or the Five-Man Band in Gen VI
  • sometimes protags and rivals can be one and the same if the gender you don't pick becomes the rival.
  • Many other pokemon pages are organized by generation already
  • On a meta thematic level, the first four gens all take place in regions based on Japan, and the back four as of writing all take place outside of Japan.

Alternatively if we keep the pages split into 1 per region as they are, could we at least move Let's Go to the Kanto page? They also directly interact with their predecessors, And remake characters are typically included in the original region folder (i.e. Lyra is on Johto instead of Sinnoh, even though she was introduced in HGSS instead of GSC)

Thoughts?

I've split the Gym Leaders pages by region because there's at least eight of them for each one. I agree that the protagonist and rival amount per region/gen may be too small for single pages on each. Maybe going for four gens per page could work, but a hypothetical Gen IX may make it troublesome. Still, I think we should go more by region, like with the aformentioned Gym Leaders pages, and put LGPE chars in Kanto.

Also, rethought the four pages. To make four pages with the consistent size of 170K+ characters (not bytes, characters as in plain text) each, I'll do Characters.Pokemon Generation I Bulbasaur To Parasect, Characters.Pokemon Generation I Venonat To Cloyster, Characters.Pokemon Generation I Gastly To Miltank, and Characters.Pokemon Generation I Magikarp To Mew (I know that last one won't have many monsters, but their folders seem to have a lot more tropes than the rest).

I have actually always wondered if doing away with the whole separating-by-class thing and just having region-specific character pages (eg. Kanto, with the main kids, gym leaders, Elite Four, Champion, and assorted game-specific characters) would be better. I think it would be a lot easier to find characters from the game pages. But then I guess those pages might get too long by themselves?

[up][up] Miltank shouldn't even be on the Gen I pages at all. It's Gen II with no evolutionary relatives.

Well, apparently it's considered Tauros's female counterpart. According to Bulbapedia (fan wiki, whatever) "Both are bovine-like Pokémon with the same base stat total. While Miltank is a female-only species, Tauros is a male-only species." According to the folder description "Due to Miltank being unable to produce Tauros eggs, unlike Nidoran or Volbeat and Illumise, they're mostly regarded as separate, yet related species. However, as of Sun and Moon, the Pokédex have both of them on the same page."

Change of plans. As it turns out, the thing that could take a fair amount of time today has been moved to tomorrow, so I'll take care of splitting Gen I now. Additionally, I'll do a small change to Characters.Pokemon Protagonists And Rivals to be more like Characters.Pokemon Protagonists And Rivals Kanto instead of Characters.Pokemon Protagonists And Rivals Generation I as the Gym Leader pages also use regions in their names (I think Pokemon are more recognised as introduced per generation, while human characters are more recognised as introduced per region, at least from what I see on Bulbapedia's navigational templates). And of course, I'll update our large template. Sorry for doing this earlier than expected.

Looking at the Overly Long Pages page, there is one (WMG.Harry Potter Main) that is locked.

Well, it's probably okay that WMG.Harry Potter Main is locked. Sure it's too long, but at least people can't edit it to make it longer.

As for Characters.Code Geass Britannians, I'll give a separate page for Characters.Code Geass Britannian Imperial Family, it would likely be uncontroversial.

Sandbox.Names To Run Away From Really Fast is long enough that some of its data got eaten on January 5. (Which means I can't fix the screwed-up folder markup yet.)

I'd just cut it. The trope isn't in TRS right now, isn't locked either, and as shown with the sandbox, trying to lump it all in one place causes problems.

Based on how the page is sorted, it'd probably be Characters.XCOM 2 XCOM, Characters.XCOM 2 ADVENT, and Characters.XCOM 2 Others?

[up] I'm sure some folders can be split off into their own pages. DC films (both folders, into one page) and the Harry Potter franchise can be a good start. Disney could split off as well.

XMeetsY.WesternAnimation right now has one of those red headliners warning the page is too long. I'm thinking it should be split into XMeetsY.WesternAnimationCartoons and XMeetsY.WesternAnimationCharacters. Good idea or not?

~MaLady: Since Characters.XCOM 2 has over 36,000 inbounds, I don't think splitting the page outright is a great idea. The fewer splits, the better — at least when it concerns great inbounds like that. Maybe a clean-up of the tropes is in order (before a split)? I know fans love stuffing pages with redundant examples and the like. It's been a known phenomenon that fans tend to equate tropes with "awards"... Some tropes could possibly be moved to the main works page.

~Magnus Force: Similar to what I just said, XMeetsY.Western Animation has a lot of inbounds. I don't think we should split the page into two new pages. Maybe one new page and then keep the original. So either XMeetsY.Western Animation Cartoons with the original or XMeetsY.Western Animation Characters with the original, but not making both new pages. Something else we could do is cut out forum-like rhetoric, such as "alternatively" or "or" from the start of list items. The too-long notifier regards character limits, so that should help a bit considering it's an easy find-and-replace option.

Why not the following?

If need be, I imagine the former could also be split into XMeetsY.Western Animation Theatrical Shorts and XMeetsY.Western Animation TV Shows. XMeetsY.Animated Films already exists.
