Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Explanation of what triggers the too-long page warning
Edited by kory on Dec 18th 2023 at 2:36:21 AM
I think taking a page from Administrivia.Sinkhole might be a good idea:
Quotes.Complete Monster does not have any potholes and works fine (that page is going through a Short-Term Projects thread, though pretty much everything related to the CM trope is heavily curated), so I'd say we should remove all potholes here too and possibly put a warning if people try to add them back.

Video Games of the 2010s is getting way too long. It has at least 2300 lines and there's still half a year left. We will obviously want to split it to Video Games of 2010–2014 and Video Games Of The 20152019 (it will be custom titled to have either a hyphen, an emdash or endash, I don't know these new dashes and how you people call them). That said, it seems to me that one reason why these pages are so long is because each entry has a year in parenthesesnote which adds at least 7 characters to each line, and there's 27 or so folders. =
I have a proposal to sort Video Games of the Decade pages in a way that Films of the Decade pages do, see Films of the 1980s. It has 13 folders, one for franchises of the decade, one for each year, and two for other stuff. Since these pages have video games only, 11 folders would be enough. Then we would have each game sorted by year so years in parentheses would be removed and folders would be reduced, saving on about 5000 chars. Plus, this would make splitting pages to things like Video Games Of The2010s Franchises, Video Games of 2010–2014 and Video Games of 2015–2019 more comfortable, as we'll need to do it anyway. I'm going to start Video Games Of The1980s Reorganisation, Video Games Of The1990s Reorganisation, Video Games Of The2000s Reorganisation and Video Games Of The2010s Reorganisation as part of this process and to show what I mean. I'd like some feedback.
TL;DR: I think pages like Video Games of the 2000s should be organised more like Films of the 1980s to save space and help with eventual splits when they get too long. I'd like to know if people agree.

This page looks atrocious, and I actually think it's against this wiki's policy.
The work page should have a brief description with info about author(s), format/ type of medium, release date, and a brief summary.
Then it should have examples of tropes that appear in said work.
In my opinion, it's a candidate for a massive deletion — all the folders and tables should go. It just lists games, works and people... Not a part of this wiki's mission. These are not tropes, and it's barely relevant as trivia. If the authors/editors fail to list tropes appearing in the programme, the page could even be cutlisted.
Somebody obviously put a lot of effort in the article, but it doesn't meet our criteria and it breaks our rules.
Such a change will probably require some consensus, not just my opinion.

I did find some instances of tropes, in tables under questions including (but not limited to)
- What are your favorite examples of the trope [insert trope here]?
- What are your favorite tropes in Telltale video games?
- What prominent tropes have you noticed in the media you've consumed lately?
- What useless super power would you like to have?
Characters.Kirby Villainous Factions is giving a too long warning.
Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.VideoGame.Stellaris is also giving a too long warning.

Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite. My two cents on some matters (I'll ask again about Video Games of the Decade pages eventually after I improve the sandboxes):
- Podcast. On The Rocks: It's a page about something sponsored by TVT, so a cut seems impossible, even if it breaks the rules. Changes seem unlikely, really.
- Characters.Castlevania: I've said a split was unnecessary on the discussion page, but that was before someone decided to give each character their own folder. Since characters seem to be sorted by game and some of them don't have enough content for their own pages, my proposal is to go for a group-based approach and split it to Characters.Castlevania The Belmont Clan,
Characters.Castlevania Other Protagonists And Allies and Characters.Castlevania Antagonists.Ultimately, only the first page was needed (not split by me, but I don't have an issue with the way it was done, similar case to Characters.Final Fantasy XIII). - Characters.Kirby Villainous Factions: My proposal is to make a page on Characters.Kirby Dark Matter for the first seven folders.
- VideoGame.Stellaris: Based on page length, I think a split to Stellaris.Tropes A To H and Stellaris.Tropes I To Z would be fine.

Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)I was not saying it should be cut. Just massively re-vamped. All those tabs are the same on the recap pages and on the main work page. I think perhaps it's being moved? What's the point of having this reduplicated on several pages?
In any case, the too-long-page warning is not going anywhere, and it's a problem.
Sorry, I thought that page was already fixed after the pothole removal, but I was wrong. Admittedly, this page is very irregular and it may need a revamp, but I don't think anyone tried doing one yet (it would need a sandbox, I think). Perhaps episode pages should be 25 each rather than 100 each (like Recap. On The Rocks 200 To 224)? That wouldn't quite change the page into a regular work page, but at least it would fix length issues.

Fair enough. I actually think it might be good enough to have Recap. On The Rocks 200 To 250, and then only 250 to 254 would stay on the Podcast work page. I think it could solve the issue with length.
Huh… It looks like 50 episodes is okay length, based on Recap. On The Rocks 200 To 249 (done that way to be more in line with other pages). Well, we'll see how Recap. On The Rocks 250 To 299 fares in the future, but I guess this is fine for now.
As the other proposals received no feedback in almost a week and seem relatively uncontroversial, I'll do them now.

I say take a chainsaw to some of the longer quotes and nix the sinkholes.
Remove the spoiler markup, there are 68 instances of it. Still, is no one seriously interested in discussing how to split Quotes pages? Like, does anyone think splitting such pages to things like Quotes. The Reason You Suck Speech Video Games is a good idea (very interested in opinions)?
On second thought, I'm not too sure on such an idea... tropes like these have lots of quotes instead of context in their examples, but they also have quotes pages, resulting in duplication or redundancy. This is odd, probably something we'll want to discuss someday on how to handle tropes that would attract lots of quotes.

As is Surprisingly Similar Stories: Cited Entries.
At least we staved this thing off for 6 years with the prior split. Plus the page that spun-off from it gives us a blueprint for how to proceed with SSS/Cited.
I hereby move to split off the "Other Site Entries" from the Troper Entries, move the former back to the Main SSS page in a folder, and create the following pages to hold the latter:
Characters.Skyrim Other Characters is giving a too long warning.
Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.Scrolling down Calvin and Hobbes hurts my hand. Should we split it into sub-pages? Four seems like a reasonable amount.
Make it so we never die, and take the pain away

I removed the spoilers and it's no longer giving the overly long warning. It's fixed for now, but any ideas to keep it from combining up again (it's just a large quote or two from coming back up)?
